I’ve recently acquired a trio of items from a local auction house (yet to collect) Primus tin , Optimus 8R and the this described vaguely Primus stove with accessories (green tin) Before I collect hopefully this week Just after any information on this one from the photos attached type and model etc greatly appreciated Atb Stu
Looks very similar to this No 8 - 1911 model The pot stand brackets and filling cap look the same design Primus No. 8 − 1911 'Compact Outfit' Hopefully will be collecting tomorrow ready for some tinkering fingers crossed there’s no major issues
Looks likely as the stove certainly isn't a 230 or 210 both of which also appear in similar 'Compact Outfits'. If it is the No.8 stove it will be one of by far the rarest and best these Compacts, and of your 3 purchases. It looks complete and all original too. Fingers crossed. Ian
Hopefully everything is there wasn’t able to attend the auction So took a gamble on the photos advertised Fingers crossed there’s not too many issues to sort The 8R looks as though is not been fired up of the photos
Finally got some time to have a closer look at this Primus stove it is as thought a No 8 model haven’t identified date letters yet advise on where this should be would be appreciated Also in its original tin box with are both fuel cans I presume one is for fuel the other priming fluid There is also a spares tin with a couple of extra jets along with pricker and spanner tool The burner is also present and looks ok complete with a tin folding cylindrical wind shield the tin flame cup is a little worse for ware though Pot stands are in fine shape overall everything looks to be in remarkable condition It’s had a green glossy paint job at some point in its life and this is looking a bit shabby especially the storage box Here goes for some advice Storage tin inc both fuel and spares tin as they have had a repaint job and need some form of tlc to keep them in good shape Should i tidy up and re paint ? Clean up as is ? What would have been nearest original colour for these items? The burner flame cup is the only item that is in poor shape being new to this are there replacements that become available ? The recently acquired items
Hi @Stu B you have a great stove there! The original tin box would not have been painted, but had a thin tin plate finish which dulled-down fairly quickly in use. You have the B between Sweden and Stockholm in the bottom stamp, thus telling it is from 1912 and it corresponds well with my first impression of visible details in the first photo.
Appreciate this information Thats a lot older than I was expecting given the fairly decent condition it’s in Will give it a polish up an see what other information is revealed That old illustration poster is a fantastic piece of information Thank you for this information it’s going to be a long term tinkering project this one Will start of with a clean up and try a burn firstly Then look at the other items in the kit
Letter B clearly showing now Had a bit clean up both internally with some boiling water and a polish to the exterior not to much looking a lot better The leather pump washer fitted was something else replaced this with a good match Only issue is the pump cap has worn significantly Fuelled up and primed the No 8 fired up fine fettle Burner shield needs replacing apart from this everything good holding good pressure quite impressive given it’s age

Thanks Nick very nice example just need to keep my eye out for a flame shield going spare or see if I can cut one out of something tank could do with a better clean out smelled like turps had been in there previously What do you guys recommend for a cleaning solution?
@Tony Press Inside the tank fair bit of sludge that’s hard to remove I have flushed with boiling water a couple of times was going to try brake fluid cleaner unless any other recommendations
Brake fluid cleaner would be good for inside the tank. Be careful to not splash it over other parts that don’t require degreasing. Then flush with kero a few times until it’s clear. Cheers Tony
Fun. As you can see from the Lennart F post in this thread, a cleaning cloth came with This Primus. I bought a Primus some years ago where this cloth was included. After my wife had washed it, it looked like new. Of course I do not know if the cloth is as old as Primussen, but here is a picture. Tom
The pump cap of those early Primus stoves had a considerably larger hole than the later ones - it doesn't look much worn to me as the early caps use to get oval hole quite fast when they get worn.
