Hi well googling Methyl Hydrate tells me it’s Methanol, methyl alcohol, or Wood alcohol. It is very poisonous . Traces of methanol in moonshine cause blindness hence ‘blind drunk’ It can be easily absorbed through the skin. Methylated spirit, Meths, or denatured alcohol is Ethanol, ethyl alcohol with a small amount of methanol added so it can’t be drunk. usually in the U.K. with purple colour and bad tasting and smelling additive. Methanol produces less heat per ml so less effective for pre heating. Given the choice I personally would not use it on safety grounds. The minimum PPE is gloves and safety glasses/goggles ( I worked in a chemistry lab for 27 years) So using methylated spirit/denatured alcohol to preheat and Kerosene as fuel should give a good result.
Completely agree... use outside and wear gloves! I used it because I couldn't find anything else in the garage, but I'll be buying some true Kerosene today and will add Ethanol to the list. Hopefully next pic will be complete success!
Did a bit of research and I think 1K kerosene is low sulphur low odour for indoors and 2K is central heating oil higher sulphur use with flue or chimney or outdoors in Canada @burnt45
Hallelujah... the eagle has landed! It took one, that's right one, preheat with 99% isopropyl alcohol, then she fired right up using 1K kerosene I bought this a.m. I was starting to doubt all the videos I've seen of guys starting these stoves, thinking that out of screen-shot they musta had a propane torch to secretly preheat and light them. The Meva is a keeper!
