I prefer photos with a description over a video "Look at this".
    Just saying.

    I agree.

Videos can absolutely have their places sometimes, but generally pictures, with descriptions if needed, is far better.

And especially in the reference gallery, uploaded pictures are the way to go!
    We have seen an increase in videos even there, I'm afraid, which give us the other problem we have managed to avoid with uploaded pictures to the site;
The videos are always 3rd party hosted, so they will dissappear for us sooner or later, bringing the sad text 'file doesn't exist' instead.
    Not good in reference sections.

+1 here. I find photos more to the point. I find a lot of videos have a few seconds of material I’m looking for in minutes of content.

In a great many cases, a video is far inferior to a photo- it seems most people possess a camera capable enough and common sense enough to take a clear photo useful in an archive.

Far fewer seem able to take a video of useful enough quality- by quality I include resolution, framing, steadiness, focus, panning at a sensible speed, cutting all which is not needed etc etc.

I must admit I never bother following up a 'Look at this- LINK' video without description, in case I go through the faff of loading it and it is not of interest. Maybe I'm missing out, but then again...

I agree I far prefer photos and videos waste my precious data but I love presscall’s burn videos where you hear a burner roaring so that is their advantage - Sound.

That’s primarily why I do them, yes, but only as a supplement to photos and not instead of them.

Over on CPL a newbie had an under-performing Tilley pump and needed the sound of one performing correctly. A sound file would have served but a video established it was the pump making the noise and not me.

Also, the task of explaining to someone new to the thing how the elongated jet nipple slot on an Optimus 111 spanner/wrench works was better done in a video I’d say.

It's certainly possible attempting/posting videos will increase.

    > As-is, currently:
I can only guess youtube is biggest video site. Myself, I am known to provide the exact title of the video that can be searched on youtube site... no connection to CCS.

Videos, today, are resource hogs vs simple static JPG files. Many users can not easily play videos or (attempting) execution of video play might have crippling effect on the performance of their device (until video runs or is aborted).

This is a site rule that "probably" should apply to videos?
Do not hotlink pictures from other websites. If you wish to post a picture from another website please obtain their permission first or post a link to the page containing the image.
*My impression, the current status, all videos are a form of hot link.
*it is a given that others do not agree.

*My impression, it is unreasonable that regular occurrence by users results with efforts by site staff to resolve failing links later.
It's been said video/link will fail, IF members want to post videos a comment explaining/anticipating a failed link would be appropriate.

    > Future consideration short term, *my impression:
CCS might consider creating a category for all videos. Category with caveat (like auction watch) content will expire.
Making a comment that uses a video would add 2 steps for user (0 steps for admin), post video in video category, when making comment in original topic, link to the video.

    Future consideration long term:
[Does CCS have long term considerations :-k, i do not assume nor take this for granted]
Video posting on all sites will likely increase (1. it $ells software & hardware). Web platforms will evolve and might better accommodate videos as a standard practice (future version of CCS platform).
    ---------------
Digital images are, now, accommodated as a standard practice, that was not always the case. Sites evolved ".JPG" format being the most common.

@OMC I’m dismayed you advocate drafting and application of ‘site rules’ on this issue. It would be pedantic and quite unnecessary to do so, using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Problem with bandwidth? Don’t click on the video.

I consider your freedom to indulge in the verbose, often arcane, monologues you favour is something I would readily defend if someone were to advocate a site rule on concise, intelligible use of English. Play fair OMC and don’t propose something equally repressive on the use of videos.

presscall you're a stated proponent of posting video/links sourced offsite onto 2nd site (correct me if i'm wrong, please).

Well received for the most part.
I expect posting videos this way will steadily increase. You are in line with trend/future.

currently on CCS, i am not in line with this trend/future.
currently, we find no common ground. sorry. Sorry too, you consider it not fair to mention. If so, that's not good.
I am taking only part of the rule, you/some might reasonably object to that.
"Do not hotlink pictures from other websites."
On it's face videos have not been considered, also a definite fair point.
My impression, the current status, all videos are a form of hot link.
*it is a given that others do not agree. Others might be quite certain i am wrong about this and explain the flaw in my thinking? Currently I see the two as functionally the same.

This need not continue you & I. The site, Ross, may also be a proponent of posting videos or have recommendation shy of clarifying site rules (if so you win, done). I would guess the trend leans to videos welcome.
    -----------

BTW CCS has given "sticky pin" to this popular and massive 2016 thread: Entertainment , so clearly, in that category/context posting videos onto CCS is a non-issue.
That is in the lounge and is not apples-to-apples (yours being campstove content) but that thread is videos posting regularly and a non-issue. I offer this as relevant to your viewpoint.
It doesn't effect my view in large part avoid "...regular occurrence by users results with efforts by site staff to resolve failing links later." "IF members want to post videos a comment explaining/anticipating a failed link would be appropriate."
    -----------

Right you are, while research is ongoing with focus on accuracy I do not also focus on "proper" presentation. it's not me, omc.

My original post references videos with only words to the effect... "Look at this".
No explanation, no pictures, and I often think it is only a clickbait to up their youtube view count. I myself usually pass.
This site is better served with photos for the resource that it is.
Videos, if needbe, to clarify the points. Not a "Click Me" all by itself.

Presscall videos are the good example that I mean.
