I have this Optimus 8 and the flame is getting more and more wild for every time. (like it very much) Now even the tank starts to fire is this ok or will my children be without there daddy soon? Best regards Kasper from Hedekas
Is not the srv supose to release the pressure like this? The tank is burning hot. How is it supose to work?
Yes, the SRV is supposed to release pressure but only when it exceeds a maximum. Yours may be leaking at low pressure either because the pip needs replacing or the spring is too weak or someone has loosened the adjustment screw (where the flame is coming from) too much. Either way, you shouldn't have flame from the SRV as it is dangerous.
It is good that it is burning stronger each time, means it is clearing out any nasties and finding its stride You do however need to address the SRV issue, probably replace the seal/pip. This is unless it has a genuine reason to relieve, i.e. boiling an overly-large kettle/using an overly-large pan etc. The tank does get very hot in use so this isn't the best of indications. Your video shows it running nice and strong, the "candle-like" flame would tend to suggest the seal is just passing. Alec.
from video conclusions: 1 - SRV not backing to the initial position need to be fixed proper is two positions a closed b open if tank is overpressurised - but only to reduce internal pressure/ for "moment" on video We see "half open" or "not close" 2 - IMO flame is too strong/long for that construction it generate to rich heatback to the tank partially heat shield could compensate part of that heat - but as We see, is in low position, what not working with long flame --------------------- in that situation/condition any pot on the stove only rising problem --------------------- We do not know fuel type preheating process - could be overheated at start wire on vick could be" too good" ---------- overheatet in preheating - with "good fuel" - with to strong heatback thru the wire in fuel pipe - could give that effect @Rangie
It looks like the tank is very well pressurized and the SRV is doing what it was designed to do. I've never had a small stove flame like that from the burner, plus have never needed a flame that big to heat with. I have only had one model 8/8R release out the SRV and then the tank was too hot to touch for more than a split second. Duane
The only way I can get a flame like that is burning the stove for a good amount of time or heating up the tank with a torch. I have only had a small candle flame on the SRV. Are you doing that?
It is the heat from the burner that make the tank get so hot. If it Wasen,t fore the flame from the tank i would be happy. it boils water fast Small burner lott of power
Greetings, @Kasper Gustafsson , Welcome to CCS! I strongly recommend that you NOT use your Optimus 8 until it has been serviced, and the SRV is once again setup properly. A failing SRV has caused many uncontrollable burn problems for some poor folks in the past, and you do NOT want to add your name to the list! Also, when you are replacing the SRV pip and possibly the spring, you might want to replace the fuel cap gasket, too, just to cover that base. Lastly, I would not run your little #8 at such a high flame. It is designed to boil a pot of water in about 8 minutes, or so. If you are getting super fast boiling, in the 3-4 minute range, your stove is burning way too hot!! If you need fast boiling times, use an Optimus 111, or 111B. They are designed to boil water faster, and in a totally safe manner. Good luck on getting your #8 running as it should, without the over-pressure problems that I see in the video!! YIKES!! Using your stove like that may well result in harming your family, and/or burning down your house!!! Serious stuff! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
to rich/long flame for sure - too much power for that construction (it is small size self pressure stove)- in current condition at first - how do You preheat that stove? 1 cup of meths is enough in non winter time second - use heat shield in high position --------------------- tank heat source 1- preheating - mostly conduction thru fuel pipe 2 -burning - burner to tank conduction thru fuel pipe 3 - burning - burner to tank - thermal radiation - heat shield is for that type of heat upper is "normal" below is "un normal" 4 - burning - burner to tank - directly by the flame
That's definitely the time to shut it off! As the 8R is naptha/autofuel the flame is extremely flammable and it's heating the tank more than it should. Check out the SRV and repair it as per the instructions above.
If you are not comfortable with changing the SRV. I have a few good caps in my spares box, I changed mine for double working ones. This way I can use my 8r with a mini pump. PM me if you want it.
The SRV was intended (I guess) to re-seal or reseat after an event, but that's probably not the way to bet. The elastomeric has undoubtedly long ago lost any pliability it once had. The stove itself however appears to be operating normally otherwise. The design of the 8 series stoves may be more prone to the SRV being tripped particularly if a large diameter pan is used, as a greater amount of heat will be reflected back on to the tank compared with other models.
