Today the 11th is Veterans Day here in the states to honor our veterans. Pulled early KP duty and made some SOS to say Thank You to all who served. Used Coleman Mil Spec lantern, M-1950 stove and mountain man cook set. Thank You Veterans each and every day. Daryl SoCal

Happy Veteran's Day! Thank you for all who served. My father in law is 97 years old, and a veteran of WWII, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge. We're very proud of him.

11th of November is marked as “Remembrance Day” in Australia with, among other things, one minute of silence at 11am.

I, too, lit an M-1950 in remembrance of our Vets. I was only making coffee, but I could only imagine how good one would have tasted in a cold Korean outpost.

    Also Armistice Day elsewhere.

"eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month"

Earlier today (at 11am) I attended the "Veterans Day Event" held at the University I used to work at (I am now retired). Some storm remnants and and a blast from a tornado warning siren sent the event indoors, so it was held in the Chapel. In previous years, outdoors, there a a fair amount of talking and sharing among us old vets. That does not happen in a church. Watching a color guard, of ROTC candidates, with nonfunctional-looking M16 rifles (I guess wood and steel M14s are too heavy) trying to march in church was entertaining; at least for me it was, probably less so for the marine staff sergeant trying to get them to look somewhat military.

The University President spoke briefly -- given his positions on pretty much everything else, I am guessing it was painful for him to honor anything to do with the military. And indeed, he kept it short, but still he got his picture doing it. Likewise for the clergywoman who gave a touchy-feel-good invocation.

I obviously need to go somewhere else next year.

Wife and I just returned from an annual Veterans Day observance in a local Memorial Park that in turn is dedicated to armed services vets. They have an annual Memorial Day event there, too.

My wife's late dad lied about his age to join the Navy in WWII at 17. My law firm senior partners were all WWII vets, two of them in serious naval combat operations.

My dad was 4F in WWII because he was mostly deaf. He served as a Naval officer in the Korean War as a dentist at San Diego, something that was very important to him- to be able to fulfill the military obligation of his generation. His brother was a WWII purple heart recipient.

My granddad, Edward F. W. Winskill, was a Royal Air Force pilot in the First World War (he was Canadian). He flew as an artillery spotter in many active combat operations.

In the US, the Congress in 1954 changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day, to honor all military vets.

We think it important to attend these events.

    Howdy, Ed,

Thanks very funny! SOP for hair length, back then, was 3", and as you can see, mine was right there at the limit! But, I'd have to give it to then Governor Reagan! He was quite a guy, and still a hero of mine! Best to you and the Mrs., and God Bless!

    - Doc (By the way, that photo was taken around 50 years ago!! Time flies!)
