Made a couple Tin Can Pot Stands for a Primus 71 and Svea 123R. Both stoves came with rather bulky multi person mess kits. Edelwiess and Sigg Tourist with stoves are great complete kits let's be clear about that. Wanted something small like the Svea 123R with windscreen which you can use a variety of pots and pans on. I know Primus made the tin outhouse looking stand with hinged doors and also an aluminum mess kit. That is what I got my ideas from. Could be made with one can and cross bars or two cans. The one can nests somewhat inside the other. I think the top piece may act as short windscreen like the 502 has. Both fit inside the Camping Gaz cook/store case. Could cut into the camping gaz set or SS mugs and have similar items. As you see they work as intended. Daryl SoCal
@Daryl , how hot does the fuel tank get during cooking? The "outhouse" style supports have a baffle to minimise heat radiating to the tank. I'd want something like that if it were me.
Great idea! I love seeing ingenious posts like this, I passed on burners without the stands in the past, now I'm going to keep my eye out for one to try this.
Good question about tank heat for sure. Not something to overlook. Will do some temperature checks with a Svea123r in a Sigg kit, Svea windscreen and my tin can stand. Will add baffle top to the one without to block some radiating heat and drill some ventilation holes in base. I know the Svea 123R get too hot to handle and will melt plastic when in use.
I've used the Svea 123/Sigg combo for the last 15 years, cooking steaks, boiling water, frying eggs and bacon, making coffee, etc. with no overheating issues ever, nor 'plastic melting'. Though I figure you could melt plastic with it but how would that come about?
Svea 123R not with Sigg kit. Svea 123R with windscreen on white vinyl table has left round imprint. Your milage may vary.
A plastic bag escaped from an adjoining campsite, and was blown into my Peak1 lantern. Instant molten mess. What are the chances? But things happen. ….Arch
Added ventilation holes to can and photo shows baffle. Used pocket thermometer on naked Svea 123R and the same Svea 123R with windscreen tested top of tank and both were 230 degree range. Windscreen got in the way of measuring base of stem. I am the last one that wants the PRV to blow and did 3 7 minute water boil runs with each. Will boil some more water today. One thing nice about my 71 is that it has somewhat adjustable flame. High to say medium low before going yellow
You might also include a 123R in an enclosed can with no baffle below the burner. That is the concern here. The flame directly heating up the tank with no ventilation.
