Both No 5 S:or The one with trivit has a dent at pump not sure if worth restoring but got it for nothing so could make a good one from the pair. Seems one is a 55 the other has 32 on base no stamp on burner neck £18 for both how did I do and any tips thoughts or recommendations welcome. Ps. Happy Christmas
store closing is usually not a good thing but congrats the 32 looks like it might be AC above the 32 ?... there should be date code letter(s) above the 32.
As far as I can see you may be correct it looks like a AC 32 that's the nicer looking one . Plan is to take bits off the 55 and make a good one with the 32.
Both are well worth saving, dent or not... Spare parts are easy enough to get hold of, once serviced there will be decades of life in both!
Thanks folks, I have owned brand new army 12 which I used away in camper it's great tho very heavy. It and a little Colman petrol stove both had adjustable flame valve. Few questions if you don't mind. I take it these work on number of pumps to increase pressure? Where is best place for spares kit in UK ? Is it worth trying to revive pump leather or just replace. Any idea what S:or stands for, is this the most basic no 5 is there much difference between these & fancier models? Many thanks in advance.
For seals, washers etc, the Fettlebox (sponser of this site) is the usual place! Base camp (wonderfully old fashioned service, website simply lists of parts and prices and lovely people to phone with your order) or various ebay sellers can supply larger parts such as caps for the burners. The S:or means senior, but ironically this denoted a budget model with the tank stamped from slightly thinner brass....
Good morning @Gerard Walsh and welcome! to answer your questions; yes, they work on the pressure in the fount, more pressure means bigger flames. One can lower pressure by using the pressure release valve near the filler cap and later pump some more to increase again. A good place to find all seals and pump caps in "The Fettlebox" (see advert near the top right hand side). If the pump leather is still in good shape it can be revived by soaking it in oil. I use mineral motor oil and soak the whole assembly over night. Carefully 'masaging' afterwards will help too. Senior, there is also a Junior version (J:or). They were slightly cheaper, using slightly thinner material. Most (well, all really) parts are interchangeable, the only difference is in the fount. Hope this helps!
Stove lighting instructions here. Kerophile also provides good instructions for lighting silent burners in post #14 in this thread. Pump leathers can often be saved by oiling, but often have deteriorated to the point they soon tear apart in use. If in doubt replace for reliability.
Thank you all so much for replying. Ok it be a shame not to get both stoves working. I'll order full spares for both, and try revive the leather in meantime. Always fancied one of these brass beauties, now I've two. Now I want all the others lol... I have a strange little gas stove I'll post up a pic of a similar one that you folk might like. I'm trying to find out about it's history but not much online but it appears to be very old it's all cast iron & very heavy some of mods can delete if not wanted.
That was getting thrown in a skip I decided to rescue it. I've actually had it running on gas Anyways just thought some you guys would appreciate it but delete if not in right section.
Might be hard to see but has a we lever on front which directs heat from top to oven & that's a we gas ring on side too.
Looks great! Most certainly worth cleaning/restoring to its former glory! A moderator might remove it to a more appropriate forum like the lounge or so but it is worth keeping
Yes no probs, not sure where to post it it only needs a fitting to connect gas line but strange thread I've tried loads nearly but not right but it's in perfect condition, I'll take a look at it in new year get actual pics etc that are on my old phone. All the best have a nice Christmas.
@Gerard Walsh you have mentioned camping, this is a camp stove site. basic fyi if it hadn't occurred to you: silent burners do not bode well exposed to any wind. it's not typically a camp stove (unless adequate wind shielding is integral to overall cooker setup). another basic fyi, a roarer burner will fit and perform the same on your 5 as it does on the 1. domestic silent vs roarer, the roarer is the preferred burner for outdoor use.
@OMC . The stoves are from 1938 and 1956. Why not keep them original, all you have to do is take a simple windshield. I use a silent stove camping with a traditional "beanstalk" kitchen stand.
