I just received my new-to-me Shmel Model 1. Everything looks in order except the pump isn't pumping. I checked the o-ring and it is greased up and pliable, but I tried both of the ones from the parts container. They also won't "grab", not even a little bit. Is it possible both of these have shrunk or could something else be off? I find it odd that none of the 3 work at all. Yes, I'm aware of the leather cup "hack", but I don't have parts on hand to make that work.
I have a working stove now! I got a new o-ring from the hardware store, and cut the notch, though clearly not big enough as I have to tilt the handle to let the air escape. It's burning too much yellow at the moment, but it lit nicely.
@presscall Do you know if the pump cap seal is the same size as the one on the Phoebus 625? I used the o-ring that was included in the spares box to test the stove but I need a long term fix.
By curiousity, I did check the one on a 111B and the problem is already fix by Optimus. Have look. 1 mm of difference Have a good day.
That orange look to your flames is just burning off rust and crap. Good on ya getting it going! I've got a couple of 625's but none of those
It's been fun so far. MOre than I would have normally paid on ebay (heck I don't usually buy from ebay), but being a Phoebus clone AND being CCCP marked Soviet era (I love world history) was more than I could withstand. Plus it came complete including carry case and printed instruction book (on VERY thin paper), including a mfg date of 08 83. I've got the burner caps in the evaporust right now. I was close to pulling the vaporizer screen out but I think it is reasonably clean enough. I did soak the jet in lye solution. Got the SRV serviced this morning and now it just needs a bath.
I still think I have too much orange. I have cleaned the burner caps as well as the bowl. Other thoughts? I do have some fuel treatment added to the coleman fuel that I put in it. Maybe burner too hot/rich?
I don't like "stuff" added to fuel. Like the man above mentioned, a couple good runs will do it good. Good looking units, I have been tempted....
But maybe take out the mesh and clean it, or replace it with a brass one. The old one may be corroded ( it is steel)
Same. A friend gave me a can of some "extra special super secret" stuff as a gift, and I felt compelled to use it. After opening then can and putting a few drops in a lantern fount I put the remainder in a mason jar and there it sat for several months, and began to separate. So I started to look for opportunities to get rid of it. I put most of it in a 5 gal RUG can I use on my lawnmowers, added decent amounts to several kero burning lanterns, but also put a tablespoon or so in an MSR bottle of CF, which is what I was using. I struggled to get my Coleman 500 going the other day, but that was without a preheat. Back tot his stove, I realiazed I did not have the outer cap secured under the "knobs" on the burner which keep it in place. THis helped somewhat with the next lightup, but not entirely. Fresh fuel is next.
I don't doubt it, but at the same time I've run some pretty sketchy fuel through my Coleman 530 and it burns blue as ever. I'll try it tonight or tomorrow with clean fuel and report back. But if its still orange I'll probably need to clean the vaporizer screen.
I found one that worked at Ace. The notch method to prevent suckage is not working very well, but its useable.
Probably not as I got it in the plumbing section, but its just a pump ring so not a safety hazard. I'm probably going to look to converting it to a leather cup as I'm not very happy with the action of it. I',m probably going to end up ordering the Phoebus 625 kit from fettlebox for the flat cap ring as soon as I get confirmation that the dimensions are the same, and it comes with a leather cup.
