Any ideas on age, bringing her back or swapping burner for a roarer? I assume what I see is the lower half of a silent (pathetic!!!) burner? Best formula to remove patina? Thanks much. Don
Hello , Looks like a fairly late production model , maybe 60 - 70’s ? The burner looks original and only needs caps to function . The silent burner is correct for the No.5 . Inner and outer caps can be sourced from Base Camp or from other sources online . There are many members here with far greater knowledge than I have so I stand corrected if I am mistaken Cheers
It's late 1950s (you can tell because the stamp is on top of the tank, and not on the front panel), and the 5S designation was dropped by the early 1960s. From 1963 or so, Optimus acquired Primus, and adopted the sunken filler that was patented by Primus in 1924 for its own stoves, then designated solely as 1 & 5. The shallow curve leg profile belongs to the late 1950s. The burner and spirit cup are both original to that stove, so, you might want to retain them. It's a 5S, so the silent burner was always there, and it's never been replaced by the look of it. Peter
@Mcbhaine the silent burner is not actually pathetic it boils water faster than a roarer I have found. They are more suited to indoor use or in a sheltered spot outside. The outer and inner caps are available as @A A C suggests a good stove in my opinion. Good luck which ever path you go down! Cheers Nick
Very nice find Don. Good formula is to leave as found. Has its aged unique look now, not like the over polished ones see.
Many thanks, all. Replaced pump cup, turned a 8r burner upside down over it and WHOOSH!! VERY hot burn. I say "pathetic" because I get a juvenile satisfaction from roarers. I stuck a Portugese riarer on it fir now, but will look foe proper silent cuos.
