I've not seen a square Sirram kettle before, so could not resist when I saw it. Other than a small solder repair to the base, it's in very good condition. I'll re-attach the chain to the spout cap once it's had a gentle clean. I would estimate it as pre-WW2 as I think that most post-WW2 Sirram products were tin or aluminium. It is probably from a picnic set as it has a fold-down handle. I won't be polishing this as it has a lovely mahogany patina. The last image shows the kettle next to a Svea 123 for scale. Terry

Hi Terry, lovely kettle! I've been on the look out for a square kettle myself (the narrow boat type or similar) but gave up as things got to expensive (shipping goods to Belgium has become very expensive on ebay ) for my wallet . Do you think it would be possible to complete the set? Maybe they are as rare as hen's teeth, it is the first time I see one mentioned on CCS. Very good idea not to polish this one, the patina is simply gorgeous! All the best, Wim
Fantastic square kettle Terry. Great design and wonderful patina. It must be part of a set that sits in a rectangular container. I would love to see the complete set. I wonder if someone on CCS has a set or has a photo? It also reminds me that I must post another of my kettles in the Reference gallery.
I do have part of a set IE Burner and Kettle made by Ilat as part of a picnic set that would have had sandwich boxes etc all in a drop front wicker basket,the burner is a very simple meths pad type of thing with a lid I will post a photo later. The kettle has a conical hole from underneath with a small heat exit point on the top a bit like a volcano kettle?
Hi, Terry, Fitting in to the deep love our Brit friends have with tea, I think it's grand that SO many different types of kettles exist over there!!! Seeing this one is a true wonder, to me, as such things are just not seen over here, or at least not very regularly. About the only tea kettles of note here are some copper ones with Delft-ware handles. They seem to come in batches. I like to have Da Missus go with me to some charity shops to see what's on the shelves. The "big" charity shops here are Salvation Army, Goodwill, St. Vincent DePaul, Deseret, Thriftco, and Valu-Village. All are good sources of fun things that Da Missus and I seem unable to live without. She like to look at the books and I like to look at the housewares. Once in a while there's something useful or "needful" for me there. The most recent have been a couple of Force 10 sea swing type marine stoves based on the Gaz Bleuet S-200 series. Canisters for them are available now, so they're usable again. Gerry
@nmp Aware this is a very old thread - but I am a huge fan of ILAT picnic sets and have recently purchased an excellent set, pretty much of the sort you descibe in your post - kettle, with bandalasta picnic ware, in (in my case) a refine covered drop-fronted case. Wonderful thing. Enjoyed a picnic using the set today. the kettle boiled quickly and without fuss. Even my better half was quietly impressed :-) Reason for posting is that my set is missing some parts...two to be precise: I think I'm looking for a tin caddy (probably with a nickel plated lid, approx 9x8x10cm high, plus another smaller tin, more like 2x8x10cm. I'm guessing these dimensions, based on the slots that are vacant in the rattan-bound rack that forms the lower tier in the case. A complete set is a lovely thing to behold - and if you have tins from a set that is too far gone that you might consider parting with, it'd be great to hear back. In any case, its good to meet someone that appreciates a square kettle! I'll post a couple of pictures.... assuming whole picnic sets are allowed on CCS!!
@Rob McCall congrats on the ILAT picnic set, I was happy just to get hold of a kettle. It's been polished up quite a bit since this shot was taken.
@Rob McCall I am very sorry but I do not have any spares to complete your lovely set , if I am honest I cannot remember what happened to the kettle even, I may well have sold it on! I will keep my eyes peeled at the fairs etc I attend for any Ilan spares. Good luck in your search. Nick
@presscall @nmp @Robert Radcliffe They were a well designed outfit, very well suited to the cube teapot ( thanks presscall for the patent doc!). I’ll admit to having a few different sets from the prewar period ( this one just: 1938ish I think) - and I rate these sets as just about the best use of space in the case, the most practical to use today and made from top quality materials too. I have a couple of other Ilat sets, variations on the square kettle theme, which if interested / acceptable I’ll post some shots of later. Thanks for the offer of keeping an eye out for parts! My project for my retirement (still a way offf…) is to team up with a tinsmith ( a sadly endangered breed) to repair/ replace some of this missing tin items from this and other sets… thanks again for comments.
Certainly I’m interested and the only CCS rules I recall relate to political/religious diatribes and the worst profanities, so perfectly acceptable Rob! John
@presscall Thanks John. Below a couple of images of the flat case version of the Ilat set. You can see it made excellent use of the case space, with no awkward gaps left infilled. You’ve got to love that green Bandalasta!
