I just acquired a 1.4 litre plain aluminum Trangia kettle. Left some water in it over 3 days of use, and noticed corrosion pits starting inside. I have never encountered plain water causing corrosion in aluminum like this before. What is everyone’s experience?
Did you store anything in it.ike a stainless teaspoon? That is how my aluminum coffee pot corroded Tom
Nothing at all in contact with the metal except plastic wrapped tea bags. Kettle was dry. I have got corrosion in the past from wet tea bags left in the kettle in contact with aluminum.
Have you had any corrosion of any other aluminium pots etc from the same water source? Has your water source changed or had the treatment changed. That could affect the pH of the water and caused it to corrode the kettle
This was mountain creek water. No sign of it being hard-it tasted good and made beautiful tea and coffee. No problem before at the same place, but first time using a plain aluminum kettle there. I have no way to check ph, but that is an interesting idea. Is there something about Trangia alloy?
you can get on the evilbay cheap ph and conductivity meter, Not for science but practical for every day use.
