Hi this will be my first proper post, I’ve been here for a while now and after being spurred on, by Jeremy Belgrave-Lock’s post in the S.R.G of his acquisition of a Primus number 4 previously owned by Trevor (Shagratork) at the Newark meet, I have decided post about my experience with a No4. Here is my first silent burner stove also date letter R with an underlying 13 for 1927 but how different the two stoves are! I bought this off EBay the pictures were sketchy to say the least but you don’t see many No4’s with the outer cap so i took a chance . When it arrived the inner and outer caps were from a No5 couldn’t see how many rows of holes on the listing as the trivet obscured them. Over the next few months I found an outer cap on EBay then made an inner cap, with the help from posts by Kerophile thanks for the information, so the burner was installed onto my 210 , as my N.R.V tool was to short to reach the N.R.V. Of the No4. The first burn resulted in lots of yellow Smokey flames so checked the jet, it was 0.32mm so I ordered a 0.23mm from Basecamp. Still yellow and Smokey at low tank pressure, so I modified the outside diameter of the inner and increased the radius on the top corner to increase the air to fuel mix and off she went. Primus 210 with the outer cap and the home made inner cap Before modification to inner cap After modification to inner cap Now what do I do with the No4 stove with the eroded pot legs?
Welcome Benzine. Very expertly done too. Printed sintered metal? Here’s my ‘old technology’ production from steel sheet - ‘dome’ hammered in a sand bag - and strip steel silbrazed together. I’ve made others since and found that a flat as opposed to a domed top didn’t adversely affect combustion. You ask what to do with your residual No.4? They’re a better stove with the No.4 pan ring. It’s of smaller diameter than that for a 2-pint stove and it would mask the worn pot rests. I don’t know offhand if Base Camp stock them but I think Juliands (ebay) has an equivalent of a suitable diameter. Nice installation on the 210 though. John
Thanks for the reply @presscall the inner cap is turned from stainless steel and the radius filed by hand , don’t think my brazing skills are on a level as yours! the one in the centre is what I started from
Thanks John I have the pot support ring perhaps I will just leave the pot legs and try to for get about the state they are in I need to remove the NRV so that the burner can go back to where it belongs. Just realised you put Benzine my first stove was and is a Svea 123 when I first came to this fantastic resource, but paraffin seems to have taken off over the past few years . Ian
@C6H6 Ah, you’re Ian! I thought it might be Ben with the chemical formula for benzine as your username. Expertly turned inner cap and it’s good you’ve got the pan ring. Yes, a longer NRV key would be a good investment, or more probably with your evident machining skill and resource, make one from stainless or silver steel. John
@C6H6 And you were inspired by my post? Your skills far outweigh mine! Great work and post. Regards Jeremy
@Jeremy Belgrave-Lock Thanks Jeremy for your reply. Skills are only what I have learned from reading this forum and a little bit of adaptation on my part.
