Hi from Southern NJ - new to this site. A friend recently pointed me here for info on a stove I recently bought (SVEA 105). I’ve been collecting GPAs for a number of years - mostly Coleman lanterns plus a couple Tilleys. I have a few stoves including my dad’s old 413 that I still use when camping, 2- 502’s, a 423, 530, a couple others, and now the 105. The 105 is missing a couple parts- the 3 legs, inner / outer burner caps (first priority), and the trivet. I also think the pump leather is shot, but I’ll try some neats foot oil and see if it comes back. Steve
Here’s a picture of the 105 and a couple of my other stoves. The 425E is unfired and still has the original packing tape holding the grate in place and the coleman paper underneath the lid. I don’t see the date on it.
Welcome to CCS Steve. My first kero stove and also what brought me to CCS was an incomplete Svea 105. Exactly the same as yours, missing burner caps and pot supports. I was able to get genuine Svea caps from Base Camp although that probably isn't possible now. Fortunately, burner caps are somewhat standardized between manufacturers so you shouldn't have any problem finding a cap set that works. I got lucky and found a dented up Svea 106 without a burner a couple months after getting my 105 and used the pot supports and reserve cap from that to replace my missing parts. Good luck getting your 105 complete and running. I would check with Base Camp to see what they have. If not, Surplus British SH&H outer caps seem to be available on the web and I've good good results using those.
Thanks for the insight Ray. I’ll check Base Camp and Surplus British. On closer scrutiny- I’m also missing the reserve cap - although I’m not sure it would prevent the stove from running. I’ll post another picture once I get it cleaned up a bit- I like the patina but do want to get the oxidation taken care of.
Your 425 should have dates in two places; stamped on the bottom of the stove case and underneath the tabs on your tank where it hooks onto the case.
Surplus British is not a brand name. They are SH&H brass outer burner caps that the British military used. I think they are from 1945 and it seems there are still a bunch of them around from ebay sellers and others. I like them because they produce a bluer flame than some of the newer manufactured Asian caps. Reserve caps are for sealing the tank for transport after the burner assembly has been removed. I'm sure Base Camp would have them as Optimus reserve caps fit the Svea. They screw on to the end of the pump rod when not needed.
Aha! Looking at parts diagrams the Primus 5, Optimus 5, Radius, and SVEA105 stoves all appear to be basically the same, but I’m guessing. Base Camp shows part numbers 2180 and 2183 for inner and outer burner caps for the Optimus, I’m thinking these are what I’m looking for (assuming the SVEA 105 and Optimus 5 are similar enough). I’ll email them tomorrow and if they have stock I’ll get the inner/ outer caps, some pot supports, and with any good fortune a reserve cap (and maybe even a trivet). Just need to hide the receipt from the wife . PS - Elcarlstono- I checked and found the date on the bottom of the 425 - 8/75. Don’t know how I missed that!
