G'Day from Canada, I lived in Aus and PNG for 17 years and became an Australian so I do feel entitled to say G'Day We bought the Companion Safari 1700 about 1973 or '74, probably from a Clark Rubber store, and even brought it back to Canada and still use it. Lately I find the burners did not put out enough heat. I use propane from either a Primus bottle or one of those disposable canisters. I have Companion adaptors for both. I was able to pass a VERY fine soft wire through one jet and it now works much better. The other jet I am unable to pass the wire through, though light does pass. I contacted Companion in Brisbane and got very quick, but very short replies that they cannot help me in any way. I have searched this forum and other places on the web and found the Safari 1700 mentioned a few times, but it seems they are quite rare - a couple of photos, a few mentions and no parts lists, manuals or spares. Can anyone 'down under' advise me on where I might find a replacement jet (or 2) for this stove? The jet is stamped "16956", but Companion would not even comment on that. Surely other models of Companion or other brands use an identical jet. Would appreciate any advice, thank you,
Hi Tony, that would be fantastic! Thank you. Stinkpot Bay, Tassie??? I have a good old friend from the RAAF near Hobart. Fred
Hello Tony, Were you able to find any 16956 jets in your shed? Camping season has come to an end here so I've put the stove away till next spring, but I'm still interested in getting it working better.
@Spitsnrover Sorry, Fred I haven’t had a chance to rattle through those jets yet, but I’ve got them all in one place! I’m currently in Washington DC. Send me a PM around 5 October, and I’ll go through the jets. Best regards Tony
I've finally gone through all of the propane/butane jets that I have, and I have not found any Companion ones yet. There is one more place to look, and I will also ask Bernie from TW Sands if they have the correct part. Tony
@Spitsnrover Can you please photograph the nipple/jet. I’ve found some from another Aussie-made stove that could be useful. Tony
Sorry to the moderator! I originally hit too many buttons and double posted the photos. Since edited it to remove the duplicates.
This is an old thread but seeing there is not a lot about this model out there I will add to it here. I had the same problem and one jet I managed to get cleared with a 6 thou wire and eventually a 9 thou wire which was a bit stronger but that was the maximum size of the orifice. So that jet works and the burner is now very nice. (Left jet in picture) The other burner had a jet that proved challenging (right jet in picture) as I could get nothing fully through it but I did get a 6 thou wire partially into the orifice from the outside (smooth side). Nothing would push from the inside through the orifice. I was eventually going to give up and look at installing another jet from a kero stove via brazing it into the existing jet. Anyway I started drilling with a 2.5 mm bit and suddenly it sort of broke through to space but not fully through the jet so the outside orifice was still intact. Beauty, screwed it back into the brass valve assembly and the stove works very well on both burners. This photo is earlier than when the blocked jets got worse and needed the attention described above. Photo just shows the model for interest and the burners now are very nice indeed. A good result and maybe this info might help someone else fiddling with this model stove. Worth noting is that high pressure LPG jets can get blocked from time to time.
