Hi everyone, Leaving aside my troubles my two Phoebus 625, I now need your assistance for another fettle. This time the pacient is an Optimus 111 (roarer burner, kerosene). The seller told me that it has never been used - and, after taking it apart, I believe this is true. After I replaced all the gaskets, pips and the leather cup, I've decided to test it for leaks by submerging in water. To my surprise, I discovered that it leaked air though the jet. I then decided to remove the jet, the needle and the spindle. First time, I used four clicks to reset the needle - and the stove still leaked air. Then three and five clicks, to no avail. The spindle was perfectly clean, I couldn't notice any defect. I even tried the stove it without the needle, but I couldn't get rid of the leak. What would you suggest to be the next step? I've read in some older threads to use grinding paste on the tip of the spindle, but I would leave this as the last resort. Many thanks and looking impaciently for your suggestions, W.S.
The only reason it can be leaking at the jet is that the spindle is not sealing off the fuel/air flow when it’s turned fully to the right. Test with the pricker rack out. Check the seat the the spindle seats into for dirt, brass filings etc. If still not cutting off fuel/air try the grinding paste but make sure it’s on the tip, not threads. Cheers Tony
Hi and thank you very much for your input. I did try the stove with the pricker rack out, but it still leaks air. I guess I should try some grinding paste. Can you - or anyone else - point me a certain product? Many thanks, W.S.
Have you looked into the burner itself? Maybe there is something inside, a damage or a blockage. You also could use some fine grade sanding paper.
Everything looked brand new, including the graphite packing. I truly believe that the stove was never fired before it reached me. When I removed the jet, the rack and the spindle, I cleaned everything up with qtips and alcohol. I even blew compressed air. I have no idea what I could have done more.
