Comet stove in dire need of repairs

Yes that flame is something else john lovely blue too. Still got cracks to solder on the burner and want to have it running right on the comet tank. I think its fairly pressure tight something is just not quite right with the pump or nrv. Struggling a bit with it hopefully will sort it just dont want to have to open that tank again. I dont give in easily so will keep at it till i figure it out like

My experience with these external NRVs… they are very sensitive in the spring tension/pip material combination. Some tests probably are required.

If there is a leak at the NRV (dunk test) try to unscrew and screw back the spring holder screw… sometimes happens that the spring twists a little while screwing down the NRV holder, compromising the perfect flat position of the pip. Screw the holder slowly and try to feel the spring… try to understand if it twists.

Another possibility is the size of the spring, maybe it gets compressed too much, causing vertical misalignment as well.

Sorry these things are hard to explain!

Yes i need to experiment with various things like the rubber and springs see if i can get it to seal better. I have the pip holder which was in the hole but there was no spring in the hole when i got it. I am begining to wonder if the pip holder is even original to the stove now as it does not seem to sit right down. Thanks for the advice i will keep at it try other things

Hi Pete, just for reference I usually use cork pips in these types of NRV. For the reasons Nicola has explained I have sometimes found rubber/Viton pip materials too hard to get to seal easily, so now always use cork as default preference.

Well here,s a update and finally made some progress at last
i took ians advice and used a cork pip and spring but still didnt feel right. So no spring just a screw driver rammed down the hole pressing on the pip holder in the nrv, well i know it was sealing when i took it out


Nice big dent in the NRV pip so i thought gotta be before this then
So gotta take the tank side off again something i really did not want to do.
Now inside i could not see anything wrong could see the nrv pip in the cross hole so i resoldered the the nrv to the tank and the pipe end.



Then of course i had to reclose the tank up.
then i put a new cork pip in and spring and pumped the pump IT FELT MUCH BETTER yipeee

Ok feeling good now i assembled the stove roughly feeling confident now



preheat waiting patientely



what a relief to see the thing fire up so easily

very happy with the outcome still a few bits to sort out need some new bolts maybe make a heat shield for the thank filler cap is a mess but the critical stuff is fixed thankfully

@presscall John I totally agree with you, this surely is eligible for a fettler master class.

Not only all the repair process has been covered with a lot of photos and with well described procedures, but it also covers a very common problem for this category of stoves (I have at least three stoves with similar problems).

So for sure my +1

Excellent restoration of the comet stove and brilliantly documented through out the stages, when i first started collecting and joined CCS i would have thought this stove would have to scrapped and broke up for parts, but with the knowledge and skills of members on here, many stoves like this that can be saved with all the various skills and knowledge.
Well done there Pete on this outstanding restoration this certainly does deserves to be in the fettling master class forum

 

What a great result, and it still looks good externally! Very well done, such a rare stove deserving to be back in action.
