We used to have one of those Aladdin Greenhouse heaters in the garage when I was a kid, to keep the frost out, only it was a blue one, worked very well.
Yes more like these , these are Aladdins aren’t they ? I remember black Valor wick heater without the flared base . Coal fires back then , houses were cold !
@The_Yellow_Ardvark That yellow flame is not correct. It should be possible to have a continuous circle of blue flame even when turned down low. As it currently is, it's producing a lot of carbon monoxide and probably soot. Not that you'd notice soot on that glorious glue pot. Best case scenario is that the wick needs trimming. I believe that trimming tools are still available online. Otherwise you need to find out why the supply of fuel is exceeding the supply of air needed for an efficient flame. I'm thinking restricted air supply to the burner, the wrong wick, wrongly fitted wick, maybe old fuel........... Regards John
I know it should be blue, it is yellow for the image. There is no soot on the glue, which is being used to melt bee's wax, that is the run off from the wax. The wick is trimmed, the fuel is correct, the fuel air ratio is correct. The CO detection in my workshop will soon tell me if I have a CO issue.
In that case I'd question the rationale behind deliberately causing a stove/heater to burn with a poor flame producing toxic products, and sharing it online where others may mistakingly believe that may be correct? Do not put your faith in CO detectors, they are to (hopefully) highlight faults developing in well maintained equipment, not a safety net allowing the use of questionable equipment. There are plenty of fake units for sale which do not work, there are also counterfeits in the supply chain of major brands in DIY shops/builder merchants. A search of CCS, as well as the wider internet, will reveal further discussion on the topic. There have been cases where corpses have been discovered and the CO alarm failed to sound. Carbon monoxide causes permanent brain damage long before it causes noticeable symptoms or eventually death.
As I sid it was for effect. I most certny do trust my Co detectorsAs I use them in my daily work. They are of the same grade we fit To HMP Prisons and places like that.
The effect of what though, appearing incompetent, or misleading others? This is a thread for sharing photos of beautiful flames proudced by classic camp stoves in sound operating condition. Occasionally an inexperienced newcomer adds a photo of a stove burning improperly and they are advised how and why to correct it. Regardless of make or model of CO detector they should only be regarded as an additional layer of safety to correctly maintained and operated combustion equipment used in suitable places. Never assume one will sound and save your health, let alone life. Apologies for the bad vibes, but despite enormous campaigns to promote awareness of CO poisoning over the years, there is still a lot of ignorance and we have something of a duty to look after each other.
1st 2 Coleman 400-499's out of hospital running side by side after both had major surgery! Total teardown and rebuild. Stove on left has BRAND NEW (NOS) Generator cut out of its packaging. Generator on right was resuscitated from Death's doorstep! ALL following pics taken at night from practically the same forward position. Moved camera in or out or higher or lower a bit. FLASH on with stoves running at full blast. Check black lever position! ================================================================= Full Simmer- Flame looks relatively huge but its actually a teensy, full micro flame. Burner bowls glowing. Everything more intense due to darkness. ================================================================= Following 2 pics running at full blast. Compare to FLASH version above. Same output! ================================================================= ================================================================= The output of the rebuilt generator on the right is greater than the brand spanking new generator on the left.
Monitor 17B Touring. I want to get out and do a few short (from home) cycle tours this summer. Things have got off to a very bad start. Out yesterday getting a few miles in and I came down very heavily on ice. I’m very sore and decided to look at a stove or two in the garage. This Monitor played up last time so I have replaced the filler seal. Excuse the clutter. I’m tidying up after the previous project. Turn the lights off and we get: A wee bit yellow. When I tipped the remaining paraffin out just now, it was definitely somewhat cloudy. This will be good enough for me though.
