Yes! Insufficiently pointy. Do you know if the 8r, 99 and 111 all use the same size spindle?

Priming took forever (maiden voyage on an old stove, so not surprised). Filled 2/3 full. Used spirit cup x 2, resulting in a very, very small flame. It slowly grew into Beelzebub.

So, did you have a change in flame when you opened the valve?
Slow prime says, to me, a lack of pressure. Now we think the valve was open the whole time.

I think it had not been run in a long time, and took a while for the fuel to wick down the . . . . wick. once it did, since there was no impediment to full throttle (the control knob doing absolutely nothing, irrespective of which was it was turned), it created a beautiful and terrible large, purple flower which needed to be smothered to extinguish. The latest insights lead me to believe that the point of my shaft is worn. i will replace it and hope it makes a difference. Thanks for yours.

Hi, make sure to clean and sand that orifice and the point of the sprindle cause of carbon accumulation.

    Not so fast…

I have a number of different spindles for Optimus stoves, accumulated over the years, and only some have a sharp point. The shut off is made by the snug fit of the convex conical shape of the spindle entering a concave conical fitting.

Only the top one is used, the rest are NOS.

    Used spindles.

Optimus used a spindle part # 2192, for the 8R, 99, 111 and can cross over for use for the 123R.

The Optimus spindle part # for the Svea 123R, 88 is 2189. It does not appear that the 2189 is specified for use as a replacement for the 2192 spindle, although it may work just fine for fuel shut off but not have the same control as the original spindle.

Here's a few pics of some OEM Optimus parts kits. This kit has most of what your needing:thumbup:

Are you sure its not just an incorrectly set pricker rack, meaning the fuel could not be turned off?

    Alec.

All - it is fixed. I replaced spindle, packing, and added a wick. When I got the darn thing Unseized, it turns out to not have had a wick. With very little fuel, the fuel would not reach the level of the horizontal vaporizer tube. With 2/3 fuel, I had pure, liquid, pressurized fuel going directly into vaporizer tube without the wick to slow it down. Pshew! Thanks, everyone!!!!

The spindle doesn’t look that bad and the “clear” area on the tip suggests an appropriate seal.

Be sure to set up the needle correctly and as per instructions. A wrongly set up of needle could interfere with the spindle shut off (the needle blocks spindle movement going against the jet before the spindle tip has reached the correct sealing position).

Ok. I tried it with the needle removed. Dunk test resulted in a bubble every 5 seconds. Will get a new spindle for her.
