G’Day all I just can’t get the lower half of the valve assembly out of the fount of my M-1950. Looks like some kind of red thread sealant was used to secure it in there. I have had it in the vice and it doesn’t want to budge! What options do I have to loosen it up? Maybe some heat?
Use a judicious amount of heat, plus penetrating oil after the heat. Repeat many times if necessary. Patience works best on this kind of job. Cheers Tony
Let us know how that turns out. I havent taken off my valve yet, and if i end up doing a full repainting i may have to.. it definitely shows some red sealant like in these photos. Im under the impression the threads are also tapered.
If you haven’t had success yet, acetone (nail polish remover) will soften the red sealer. The sealer is actually Gasiola. Careful if using a strap wrench on the fount as it can dent it. Ask me how I know :-( Hardest valve I ever removed was on my M-1950. Best of luck.
Thank you. I have been waiting on some spare parts to arrive before giving it another go which I am planning to attempt next week. In the meantime I have got my 8R and 99 cleaned up and roaring very nicely.
Yes, they are. Fiesta manufacturer left, Wyott right. The Wyott’s mounting boss for the valve (on the left here) has a greater length threaded section than the Fiesta’s. I clamped the valve between wooden packing blocks in a vice (vise, US) and rotated the tank anti-clockwise, using rubber gloved for grip. Prior to that, I played a moderate blowtorch flame on the valve and then I used an acetone/auto transmission fluid mix inside the tank (filler hole blanked off) to loosen the bond.
