Hi, I recently brought home a radius no 30. First, some good news: the original filler cap gasket and NRV magically do not leak! Now, the problem: After a double preheat with yellow bottle heet, the stove flares, with a big orange flame and fuel being forced back into the fount (quite audibly) if pumped more than 1 pump/30 secs. Sometimes, it will also burn without flamelets, with quite a weak flame, and will not increase when pumped, although this is helped by pricking. The jet also clogs excessively, requiring pricking almost every other time it is lit. Finally, and this may be due to the old NRV, the pump jerks when pumping. It will randomly jump forward about 1mm several times while pumping, although not every time. Does anyone know how to solve these issues? Thanks! -Arthur Gu
@fjfj765 You need to deal with the basics. Your first obvious problem, that should be fixed before anything else is the problem of your jet getting blocked "excessively". You need to ensure your fount is clean, your kerosene is clean, and that the burner is not clogged with carbon, has loose carbon, or has excessive amounts of carbon. Your NRV most likely needs servicing. It should pump easily without jerking. Start off by oiling the pump cup and flaring the end of it slightly, then with the lid off the tank, see if it's operating properly by hearing the air bubble through the fuel. When you've done that and operating the stove, check that the NRV isn't letting fuel back into the pump tube. Cheers Tony
Yeah, I'm planning on changing all the seals. Would a svea 123 filler gasket (OD18mm, ID10mm) fit? The original gasket has OD18.5mm and ID12.5mm. Once my NRV tool arrives, I'll order both from the fettlebox.
It has the hallmarks of either a loss of pressure - empty the fount, pressurise and submerge in a basin of water to check for leaks at fittings or passing at caps/NRV etc. Or a choked burner - remove jet and flush/decarbonise and flush. There are helpful threads in the fettlers section Alec.
is it my imagination or carbon atoms don't burn at all? Just hydrogen from the carbon chain links + oxygen from the "air" around us! I keep seeing carbon deposits on burners, heat exchanger from big central heating, big iline six cylinder heads( cummins diesel or gasoline inline six ,both high mileage), diesel heaters(air or liquid) ,even on my Shmel-2 burner... the more fuel in liquid form I burn the more black carbon I get on first contact parts! only time I've seen less is in natural gas burners(stoves) or gasoline car headers bought new 0 km but run mostly on LPG fuel for at least 200000-300000 kms before cylinder head "quit the job"... Can someone confirm my "hypothesis"?
@fjfj765 if you can immerse the burner in ultrasonic solution+ keep it in there for 30 minutes it will also clean the "hidden spots" too. burning the brazed burner is risky if you don't know the flame's maximum possible temperature...
I've already cleaned the burner with heat and air. A propane torch will braze, with difficulty, and I just got it to a dull glow in a relatively dark room, and blew air through it. On carbon, it does burn quite well. Carbon deposits are usually from insufficient air, or the breakdown of aromatics such as benzene, naphthalene, etc. About 80% of kerosene and diesel, by weight, is carbon. If it didn't burn, you'd have a pretty bad problem.
