Hi, After heavily using my Coleman 400A and 533 stoves, I've finally understood the bleeding jet issue. I was occasionally experiencing a red smoky odor residue coming from the jet after turning the stove off. Both of my stoves was doing this. If I fill my stoves fully with the funnel given with tbe stove, I experience this issue. My 400A is an old stove however my 533 was brand new accumulating a few years only. Cold starting is problematic, alot of yellow flames appear. I need to preheat the generator with a blow torch. When the fuel in the tank drops, jet bleeding stops. The stove can be cranked up nicely with blue flames, without any flare ups. My 400A stove weighs 1030g when full. It makes lots of yellow flames at startup. When I fill it up to 960g, no flare ups. My conclusion is that the air intake is under the fuel level when full. I kindly advise not to fully fill your stoves.
And this side of 'The Pond', we have the added embarrassment, when one has fuel all over place, of suddenly realising, that 'Oh Sh*t' moment, that US measurements are different to UK measurements. My 9/83 Coleman 400 Peak1 stove allegedly takes 10 oz of fuel, according to the Coleman "Bible", oh no it doesn't, it's only 8 oz when using Imperial measuring jugs!! And 2US pints is only 1 1/2 Imperial pints!! So far, not had the problem @okerol has described, thank you @okerol for the advice. Tim
They should be flat on the ground when filling. Then you cannot put too much in. Ive seen 2 overfilled Colemans. First advertised on an auction site as faulty because it had caught fire. I thought "I bet he overfilled it" and 20 bucks purchased a good condition stove. Second owned and operated by a friend. Luckily it was a cold day. It lit fine but liquid fuel pouring out the bottom of the burner. Luckily the fuel and flame never met
I always fill my stoves on a flat surface. From now on, I'll fill them on a kitchen scale to be sure not to overfill. The signs of overfilling are: 1) gasoline or fuel odor coming from the jet area during storage 2) Blue flames when preheating the generator with a blow torch. I continue preheating until the flame size diminishes. In this case although yellow flames may appear, it turns blue only after a few seconds.
i fill a 550B by having foot opposite filer tube raised up, fill it to the brim, level the tank, done, not over full i posted about exactly that but cant find it. same concept works easily in the field w/most any stove to prevent over filing (ensuring there is air space at top of tank to pressurize the pressure stove). another example same concept here
