@Debbie have a good look round the site to get the info you need the site sponsor Fettlebox in the Uk has all the washers and parts you will need. Get new filler cap washer, pump leather fibre washers for spirit cup etc Fettlebox may do a complete kit. If you run into trouble fitting them just put a post up and someone will be along to give advice. There are loads of posts about firing a stove up fuel. Etc By the way yours burns Kerosine and uses meths to pre heat the burner. A No 3 is a powerful stove and it’s great that you have a cast iron trivet, don’t drop it it will break! Have fun and good luck! Nick
Thank you so much! It has been a challenge to find any help. Many conflicting information. Or people just wanting my stove. One person told me to never use it. I can I be certain that it is safe. I think he was trying to scare me, to get me to trade it for something new.
There are valid concerns, and simple methods to ensure safety. Kerosene is much safer than gasoline. Learn how to operate the stove safely.
@Debbie I meant to send you this link earlier this week but forgot! I think it will be useful. Primus No. 3 (1927) Tony
@Debbie wonderful old stove! Just what is wrong with your pump? No stove is completely safe, flames, burns you know. As the gentleman mentioned above, kerosene (which this stove uses) is a safer fuel than some others. Looking forward to hearing about your progress.
Thank you! Any idea what year it was built. I believe it is before 1911, as the marking on it do not match the age guide I found. AV5z is what is on the bottom and No.3 is on the the top of the tank. I uploaded a picture of the pump.
My two cents. If this is safe to run (no cracks in the tank etc) it would need 4 items replaced. 3 really easy, 1 not so much. Filler cap gasket - really easy to replace. Burner gaskets - really easy to replace Pump cup - really easy to replace if the leather is bad NRV - this one is easy, but needs a special tool to remove it. If you take your pump out and shine a light down you should see a small oval shaped nut at the bottom with a hole in the center. This is the NRV, and needs a tool to remove it. Once done the NRV (non return valve) can be removed and replaced. To make the NRV easier to understand...think of it and your pump like a pump that you use to pump up a bicycle tire. The NRV keeps the air from escaping when you pump air in the tire and allows you to build pressure. If the NRV is not replaced it can leak the pressure (leaking fuel and stove will not work). Pressure is required for the stove to run. These always need to be changed, its not hard but needs a tool. Tools can be found online in places like ebay pretty cheap.
Hey, would you know what comparable pieces I would need for my stove. I was looking in Fettlebox. I am going to need to send to Canada. I want to get it right the first time if I can. Or is there comparable parts here that I could get.
@Debbie Ask The Fettle Box for a washer kit and pump cup for a Primus No. 3. You may need to take out the non-return valve (NRV). Check through this site about how to do that, but first test if you can pump air into the tank, and check that air is not escaping through the pump tube when you pump air into it. Tony
When I look through the Fettlebox store . I do not see any kits with Primus No. 3 on them. I have contacted the store. But have not heard back as of yet.
Thanks. This group is so good! For being 1956, mine must have been well used. Markings on the side are very worn. The grill is what decieved me on the age. Sweden Primus. I thought they moved from Sweden in the early 1900's.
