    What was surprising to me, I only recall seeing the issue gasoline lantern being used once in the field, though every unit probably had several in their equipment. Probably a GPA nutbar. He was also sporting the “Yukon” issue stove, a variant on the much more common GI M1941 combo wood/coal/gasoline/diesel pot bellied stove. At that time field units deployed with electric generators and used ordinary lightsets for tents.

    There was also a fuel consideration to convert everything to JP8, basically a type of kerosene. The lanterns sort of became obsolete and useless taking up space in the Conex storage and probably sold by the pound at one point on the surplus market. I wish I’d had the foresight to “requisition” about 100 mantles, though.
