@Andrew @Riaan_Dormehl Good morning Andrew and Riaan, I have removed the valve from the 2050 gas bottle. The flat seal appeared to be made from a type of dense rubber, which I had to destroy to get it out. If I cannot locate a similar seal, I plan to replace it with an o-ring. I understand that an o-ring is not ideal as a seal due to the cold temperature of gas. I will upload some images of the valve components once I am done. If you have any ideas of how I can test the gas bottle / seal for leaks prior to filling it with gas, please advise. Thank you
Me too , but from a Soviet clone. I have achieved a tenfold reduction in leakage (now it is ~ 10 grams (0.02..0.03 pounds) per month). I did the follows: Press briefly on the central valve stem. And release it abruptly with a click. (Use a flat screwdriver or knife). Aim the valve away from your face and body. The use of protection (goggles and gloves) is recommended. Then check for leaks (with soapy foam or turn the bottle over and place it in water). It may need to be done several times - try different depths (strengths) of pressure and different directions around the valve.
I own a 2050 which was issued to the RSA Military in the 70's. Mine is still painted in the military green colour. For you that were drafted you will remember that every Ratel was issued with one unit. I plan to restore it to its former glory as it is a bit rusty. Thanks for the info about the adaptor valve Andrew. I'm down the road from you in Mosselbay.
Good morning. Welcome to the forum. You can start your own post with pictures to show what you have. Everyone here likes pictures. I went through Mosselbay 6 times in the past year but not sure when I will be passing through again. @Pieter de Villiers
Hi Andrew I will be in PE shortly. Can I contact you pls? I have restored my 2050 and want to find out where you got the conversion valve etc.
I restored my Primus to its former glory and refurbished the brass valves in the cylinders with new o-rings. It works like a charm. I bought the Cadac/Primus adaptor from Seebot in Johannesburg and can now use a normal Cadac cylinder as gas supply to the stove as well. Pity you can't get these stoves anymore because it is such a beautiful piece of equipment.
Hi, we can restore the valves on primus 2000 cylinders and give a cheeky re-fill! so if you want to keep that cylinder e.g. blue and not the now red then send a message
hi, we repair and rebuild the valves and refill the cylinders, this is so people can keep there orignal blue cylinders without having to get a red modern one. send message if you have interest.
It sure is possible to repair the valves however, we don't recommend that it is done by a normal user! the reason is simple, if it is time the seals need replacing then the cylinder will need a pressure test, we hydro test up to 30 bar! then we re-fill them good as new and send them back to the client!
I refurbished all the valves, including the bleed valve myself. It is actually a very simple process. I ordered the o-rings and seals in viton material and it now seals 100%. I get the cylinders filled locally by using the Primus/Cadac adaptor.
I picked one of these up over the summer. It came with two bottles - one empty one still full. What are my chances of finding an adaptor to something that would enable refills or gas cylinders that are easily available today? Might there be something that would enable a blow torch bottle (1” UNEF?) to be used? -R
I got myself an Abu fish smoker which fits quite well on the stove. Busy cooking some river Gurnard in it .
