Attempting my first sil brazing repair Optimus 111 silent burner

After reading enough posts I and asking a few nice people @Majicwrench @hikerduane for example) I have decided to order and try this out on a known burner I have that runs yellow.

Quick question... If I understand right... Clean the surface and work the heat to draw the solder around.

I'm ordering on recommendation safety sil 56%

Also need high heat flux, takes lots of heat to heat up the metal. A few use a torch to aid.

A few important things when you (silver) solder: make sure you have the correct heat and use the right type flux. But most of all: clean, clean!

@ajvuik A propane torch enough?

 

Ok..wire wheel to clean...flux...heat...add solder ..allow to cook normally.

Can't wait to try it.

 

I did mine (Pinhole leaks in 111T burner) using a rothenberger superfire running on propane.

I use 30% content silver rod to add an extra margin of resistance to the temperature that burner tubes can reach.

The volume of metal in a burner conducts a lot of heat away from the location of the repair and particularly with the correct high melting point silbraze (the 30% silver stuff) a propane torch would be useful to get the bulk of the job hot, but a MAPP/propane torch is needed to get the silbraze to melt and flow at the repair.

Here, I ised a large kerosene blowtorch for the maintaining the job at a dull red heat …




… a MAPP/propane torch at the same time to provide the intense localised heat to the silbraze.

I'm planning on doing it on the an enders pump rod and handle .. But planning on other junk projects that do not need to be pressure tight like keys for stoves... Yeah... I'll practice for sure

Nice that this burner is a spare... If I screw it up I can toss it

 

@Remus1956 as mentioned by @presscall , MAPP is what you need for silver soldering(brazing).

 

Man haha...this is going to be interesting. Yeah I got to get to the hardware store for a can, but I have the american equiv of that torch so just the gas needed.

Thats not an attempt @ajvuik thats success.

Mine will not be as nice. There will be a lot of swearing and moments where my wife comes out to ask me whats going on right at the best moment where its smoking and looks ruined.

How clean does it need to be? In a lot of the photos the brass does not look bright, not sure if thats from the torch. Something a wire wheel would suffice, or I need to see my friend's shop to borrow his sandblast cabinet?
