In the spirit of Doc Mark's thread Why all MSR Internationals are NOT equal!! I just received a V1 Whisperlite Internationale in very good condition. WLI V1, introduced in 1987, had a fabric covered fuel line. I'll call this V1A. WLI V1B, as I will call it, has a woven brass covered fuel line. I don't know when the change was made; the earliest woven brass example I have seen is September 1990. This one is June 1991. As far as I know this is the only difference between V1A and V1B. The WLI V1 has a shorter fuel line and smaller diameter generator than the WLI 600, which was introduced in 1993, sometime after April. The shaker jet was introduced in 1994, by October if not earlier. I purchased this WLI 600 in December 1996. Dimensions I took essentially match those in Doc Mark's thread, which included V1A, this one is V1B. The current WLI, introduced in 2012, has the same diameter generator and cleaning cable as the WLI 600, and an even longer fuel line. This is my WL Universal, purchased in 2012, which has an even longer fuel line. The height of the pot supports of all three are the same, but the distance between the burner and the top of the pot supports is greater for the current WLI and WLU than for the WLI 600 and WLI V1. They probably did that to reduce CO production, as was done a long time ago for the XGK. In all pictures the order left to right is WLI V1B, WLI 600, and WLU.
So is the cable inside the flex tube there for paraffin (kerosine) use? My MSR Firefly (white gas only) does not have one.
It is there for any fuel, though it is more likely to be needed for kerosene than for white gas. The standard, white gas only Whisperlite also has a cable, though it is smaller diameter due to the smaller fuel line/generator tube. The Firefly does not have a generator tube that goes over the flame like the Whisperlite and the XGK. The cable is used to scrub deposits from the generator tube.
So, does it work without the steel wire inserted into the fuel hose? Is it optional to have/use it? I'm contemplating using an Universal in a Trangia T25 - with a metal Primus Omnifuel (or Optimus Polaris) pump and a Primus fuel bottle. Much closer to SIGG standards that way...
WLU with canister adapter would work directly on a Primus MF/OF pump - it already have the Primus functionality with its MSR pump despite not mentioned in the instruction. It will function without wire but it would limit the vapourisation and regulating performance and it may allow deposits to build up and prevent proper cleaning. WLI doesn't work well with other pumps as it has short hose with non-swiveling connector.
Thanks Lennart. The idea is to add the WisperLite Universal (so we have 2 MSR's) to the other stoves I've gathered for a comparison of kerosene burning burners adapted for 'permanent' fitment into a T25 - all with silent hats. And they aren't intended for any long time survival - as long as they work as intended through their three test burns (to get an average) and then the simmer-test = the Excel sheet will be OK...
