Hi there stovies last saturday at work i cam across this old valor paraffin container [/url It was not in bad condition a little surface rust where the paint had worn away so i decided to repaint it to preserve it so it can now be used These paraffin containers were usualy supplied when a new valor paraffin/kerosene heater was purchased,it was designed so when you filled the heater it would stop pouring when the fuel reached the spout as there is a small air pipe in the spout i would say it works on the same princible as the fuel nozzle on a petrol pump. Usualy they had the Valor lettering embossed on the side panels and the filler cap this one is just plain it just had a waterslide stransfer esso blue on the front
Hi Brian, nice find! And at your work, you lucky man ! If it were my workplace, I'd do a thourough search of the place, one never knows what other treasures are hidden over there . Best regards, Wim
Hi Wim thank you very much these are good practicle cans to have and seem to be quite collectable they quite often get a few bids on the bay
I remember those all right. As a teenager I used to work in a petrol station which sold paraffin and I filled many of those from the big container round the back. IIRC it was about 2 shillings (10p) a gallon at the time, petrol was 5/11(29p) We used an Aladdin heater in the garage office, one with a hemispherical gauze over an annular wick, all under a wire cage. Heigh-ho, old git reminiscing...
They are quiet common here in NZ and usually in very good original condition. They don't seem to attract much interest on the auction sites here and don't really sell. John
Hi Brian . very good nice repaint valor container and i like simple design such as it. thanks sharing . Gunsoo
Hi Brian, Nice find, I have one also, but isn't it sod's law that the spout cap, which was attached on a chain is always missing. Mine is too! Steve.
Many thanks stovies for your compliements I rember those radiant heaters Zincman with the wire mesh globe that glowed when they was lit a few of my relations and neighbours had that type of heater they were very efficent in throughing out the heat i rember buying paraffin in the early 80's for under a £1.00 a gallon John I would imagine in New Zealand with your climate that they are all in good condition if left out in a shed for years Hi Gunsoo i repainted with a red oxide primmer first and then gave it several coats of plastikote metal paint to preseve it i have been after finding one of these for a while Hi Steve i have seen many of these in the past and on ebay and i cant rember seeing the spout cap on a chain they must have been easily lost i wonder if only a certain time when they were produced they were fitted with a spout cap, on this can the spout is not round but kind of oval shape and if it did have a cap what sort
The spout on mine is exactly the same shape and has no lid I did wonder if it ever had one? Mine is a bit rusty inside so I bunged a handful of pea shingle in it and shook it about for a while and got a load of muck out, but I may not use it for paraffin there is still a lot of residual rust dust in it. Its a kind of dull brown colour same as yours was with the original writing on still. I paid a couple of quid for it at a boot fair. Yours looks in better condition are you going to use it? Nick
Hi Nick i will use it as the pupose it was designed for is realy ideal i have two paraffin heaters i still use indoors with its spout it makes it ideal for filling them with its non spill spout no need to use a funnel, well worth having if they can be purchased cheaply i have seen them being bid for on ebay sometimes reaching £10
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but this came up on a search for something I was looking into. I have a couple of these cans which I use around the house but I was wondering if they ever had a cap for transportation. If anyone has one A picture would be very helpful.
