I purchased a 550B, haven't received it yet, but the photo of the bottom doesn't have a date code. Anybody know why it doesn't have a date code?
The label has a PN, please share that # with us if you could. *if you're sure it's 550B, you will have it in hand, it's best i wait til then and revisit this. *there is a brief time, 550B early production, they had no bottom stamp, it would be a 550B example that is not often seen.
Maybe it got missed when they stamped the date code. I have a 576 that has only the numeral 1 where the date code would have been. So it didn't get stamped correctly. Joseph
Can anyone see my photos? Just curious, as I've never uploaded photos here before and they don't look right on my end.
Hi, @SilentPete500 , The 550B is an excellent stove, and I suggest that you seek out the special Sigg cook set, with a proper windscreen. This combo is outstanding, and we've used it for many years! Here is the bottom of one of my 550B's: Is your stove coming with it's original box, and goodies? Always nice to have those things, but you can do without, if they don't come with the stove. Congrats, and enjoy! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
It has the storage bag, manual, and kerosene generator. No box (actually, I prefer no box because then I don't have to worry about keeping the box nice, but I'm weird like that). I've been collecting different models of single burners and have wanted to get one of these for awhile. I like learning each ones quirks and using them. I'll look into the Sigg cook set, thanks for the tip! I actually think it might be an early one because the front says "Patent Pending" along with no date stamped on the bottom. I don't know when they started making the 550B.
My comment about it being and early production one is from OMC's comment above about early production not having a date code.
LATE comment, sorry. old post. IF you're still out there @SilentPete500, we talk early 550B. I note for you & readers, it's predecessors, the 550 & 550A. You referenced me in last reply, i didn't comment further. I could have reminded you of my open question/request, above: "The label has a PN, please share that # with us if you could." With that we might learn/share more info, IF you're interested. Happy Holidays
How early is "early" for a 550B? I was having no luck finding examples of my 550B until I started looking for 550A info. Mine is painted light gray like a 550A, but the decal very clearly identifies it as a B. It has an aluminum valve like the A and a tethered fuel cap like the B, which is also original gray. It faintly says "Made in Canada" on the bottom, the year is 89, and the month digit is very hard to see, but I think it's a 1, so January 1989. I knew the original owner and have photos of the stove being used while backpacking in October 1989, so I don't think it's a month 11 or 12.
re "How early is "early" for a 550B?" Pics are most effective way to approach this type Q&A but 550B Jan 89 does look exactly as you describe. That is earliest 550B i am aware of. The OP never shared his label PN. I expect your Jan 89 550B has label pn ending with ...E 467. tag @Gas_Leak
[Gas_leak never responded, here] [[personal note: Sam RIP, a good man, sorely missed. Below, for 1st time, i'll share tidbits of, Sam inspired research I had nearly completed. We discussed details in PMs, details we developed (confirmed w/my examples in-hand). Sam chose not to open post (trade secrets?.. not sure) but i followed his lead and didnt open-post these deets for 10? yrs (nor have i seen, to-date the deets discussed at that level or i would have engaged). I'm healthy and active 65 but, the research is done, it be a shame for 550 secrets to die w/me lol ]] Hello @Dwayne Bowerman Welcome. If we could see pics of it i would guess i would congratulate you on scoring a "Nice stove !" Oh boy, your PN had to be 550B467 I can see how you might think as you did. re your "Mine is 550b467 is this an early 89 release as well ?" NO. No it is not, but you'll not be disappointed, read-on. from above: "Pics are most effective way to approach this type Q&A ^^^ still true and would help to explain/resolve this (**not sure i get back to this, i'm always short on hobby time). PLEASE post pics. You can incl. instr date (if you have) and #s stamped on top of box (if you have) Thank you, YOU DID share your "...label has a PN,..." Ok, please do correct me, correct the record, if i am wrong but** given that your label is PN 550B467 (and absent any pics !! ) I expect (best guess) yours: > with label PN 550B467 > is a model 550 (but does not say that on label). Again a 550 and not it's successor a 550A or 550B. > has name on label just "PEAK 1" with "patent pending" below it > has outer ring of fiber surrounding burner, slotted screw head center of burner > has bottom stamped "Made in Canada" but NO DATE [yes, says Coleman Wichita on label but not "made in.."] > aluminum fuel valve IF ... IF... IF every line item above is a match my >>> best guess is your EARLY 550 was made in Toronto during 1987. there are earlier versions btw. [and has earliest known version of 550 been open-posted, identified as such? ... the shadow knows] 675 views
My guess is the stoves with the missing date stamps are from around the time production first moved to the US. The number on the label only tells you what label you have and doesn’t necessarily mean anything thing about the stove. There can be changes between stoves with the same label. Stoves sold in canada usually have a C on the label number IE “400C” and it just means it’s the Canadian label with english and french, not that it is a different stove.
