It's probably the rubber o ring sealing washer in the lid that's giving the resistance. I would try pouring boiling water over the filler cap. Brass expands more than steel. It would also help to soften the rubber.

Thank you all. The rubber seal seems to have been the issue and it's now cleaned up and rebuilt with new seals etc.

I had its first full run this evening and will put it to brewing tea shortly

I know this post is old ish now but I’d just like to post my latest eBay acquisition. According to the original post it’s a #1 stove.
I’ve stripped the crappy paint and re sprayed it. Cleaned out the tank and replaced the seals, thanks to Basecamp. Gave the parts an hour in the ultrasonic cleaner and printed a new decal. Not sure if it should have one as it didn’t come with one but it looks the part. First test tonight and it’s a belter.
There’s no markings anywhere that I can see. Possibly not the best stove as has been mentioned but as I say, looks the part. No tin though!! IMG_5708.jpeg

After studying the photo’s of the stove before I resprayed it there seems to be what looks like a crows foot on one of the pot supports. IMG_2741.jpeg

That is the crow's foot, and possibly a two digit number above “?0” (possibly 50).

Used also by our defence organisations.

These do have good thermal feedback, but guessing MRE’s were quickly heated, so stoves did not run long. :)

Nice job. If you're able to reproduce that decal you might fid a few folks interested in getting one.

The decal is on here somewhere. It’s not the sharpest quality but it’ll do. I printed it on white waterside paper and sealed it with clear spray sealer before I applied it to the stove.
