Recently came across my dads old collection of stoves and lamps. Among them are a bunch of no1 s.or and at least 1 no1 S. I can for the life of me find any date stamps on them. Please help me.
Hi Martin. Welcome to the forum. You have quite a collection of Primus there. The one in photo 2, is a really old stove. It looks to date from before 1896 judging by the type of unscrewed pump assembly and tank pressing (no logo registered 1896) Really nice collection of your dad's. Greetings Stanislaw
Thanks for your reply. Pic no 2 only has ”primus” and ”patent” stamped on it. The newest in my dads collection thus far is a no. 96 from 1962 according to date stamps
You should be able to find the dates of the other Primus on the bottom embossing of the tanks in this table.Primus Dating Chart 1911 - 1964 Optimus was not dated, but someone can probably determine its period of manufacture.
Thank you. Will check in the morning lots of grime and dirt on all the tanks, so I’ll have to try and get it cleaned off.
After washing them with dish soap I can still not see any stamps on the bottom of the tanks. I can however see clearly what models and makes they are. Picture 2:the very old ”primus patent” one Picture 3: Optimus no 1S Picture 5: primus no1 s.or Picture 6: Pri-logo-mus no 1s.or
The lack of embossing on the underside of the tanks in Primus, suggests ptoduction before 1911. The filler caps are a little confusing (I only now noticed in one of the Primus, a Radius plug). They appear to have been replaced over the years. Also, the style of spirit plates can be confusing, as older models had a " cone" plate integrated into the ascending tube. For more accurate information I would defer to someone more experienced. @igh371
Agree the very old one probably c.1895. The Optimus much more recent, but, being Optimus, won't have any date mark. The other Primuses without trivets likely later 1920s/ 1930 should have date marks on tank base in very small circles with only the letter(s) and a number, nothing else, but these are often quite feint or even incomplete and easily hidden under dirt or corrosion. The one with the gold trivet may even be too recent to have a date mark but more likely will just have one of the small marks.
