kitchenkook junior series type b main gas valve

I have taken everything apart and reassembled it but somehting must not be right. It leaks out the handle end. Is there a gasket missing?

Trying to figure out why it leaks through the back end of the stem and how to light it at all?

 

What a neat old stove. Can you show where it leaks? Point a pencil at it or something. I see a drip of fuel? Is that at one of the auxiliary burner valves?

Most of these old stove use some sort of packing on the various valve stems, and tightening the gland nut is usually a good first step.

I've got several Coleman stoves that are quite similar.

 

What kind of packing? As far as lighting it, do you open the stem all the way then open then gas valve and then light?

 

Hard to say what kind of packing is in there. Old Coleman Parts has some ribbon packing, and several sizes of preformed packing, appears to be kind of a graphite looking stuff. Like said, in many cases, all you need to do is tighten the packing nut a bit to compress what packing is in there.
My Prentiss Wabers stoves use a packing that looks like a frayed rope.

I don't know how that one starts. But it will likely have some sort of preheat device which you light first, to heat the main generator.
An easier way to initially preheat generator if you don't know how it preheats, would be to just use a propane torch. Get it good and hot, 30 second or so waving a torch up and down generator, then open main generator valve while keeping torch on burner.

Thanks for your advice! I did try some graphite rope for the packing material. I'm thinking that will work. It doesn't look like there is any preheating is device. My stove does look a lot like yours. Does yours need to be preheated before you light it?

 

Yes, needs to preheat generators. Mine has two generators, one for stove, one for oven. The big white knobs are both attached to generators. See the little black knob by the big white knob on left? That opens the preheat device. When you light it, it heats both generators with a blast of flame.

I'm betting yours has some sort of preheat device, but I do not know what. A good picture of the first burner (take grate off) would be a big help in that dept.

In picture below, the pencil is over the top of the preheat generator (skinny, clean brass tube with wire loop) it will produce a flame in the little cup below it, and heat up the generator above it. Again, it would be simple to heat generator with a torch, just get it good and hot or you will have flames at burner instead of nice blue heat.

 

Tried graphite but it just oozed out the end and fuel leaked and had flames around the end of stem. Not sure exactly where it was coming from. I took it apart and cleaned it. Only place I can imagine it leaking is past the bushing along the stem. Still can't find any preheating device.

 

The bushing doesn't go in any further.

What is that little box with fuel line disconnected on the left in second picture? That is pretty much where a pre-heater should be.

You tried graphite what?? You can get packings from Old Coleman Parts.

 

That's just the main fuel line that goes into the valve stem. It was called graphite rope that I wrapped around the stem at the end of the bushing before I before I screwed on the end cap.

 

Sure looks like that fuel line goes into the box with the fitting on it? Guess I'm confused.
Get some packing from OCP, they are cheap, get several different sizes, if they aren't the right size #1 they compress, #2 break them apart and use the pieces, again, they will compress into a nice, solid mass.

 

It is where the fuel line goes but it just goes into stem where that little hole is. The valve stem slides in there.

 

I get it. Coleman used sorta same thing on their HGP
