I recently purchased this classic white spirit stove. The original owner never used it. Wondering if anyone knows anything about it. I think it is complete including a little tube or sleeve in the fuel well that I am not sure what to do with. Any information much appreciated.
Could you advise me at all about what fuel I should use? I was told it is a white spirit stove but having trouble identifying the right fuel to use. Also the use of the cloth tube??
White spirit is a down-under term. Forget what it means; but it looks to me like an alcohol stove. Others may know better.
@Ondine McGlashan It is an alcohol stove. Or as we say here in Oz, metho. It will run on Diggers Methylated Spirits. DON’T use anything labelled “white spirit”; or Shellite. Cheers Tony
@Ondine McGlashan Some more photos of the burner would be helpful. What happens when you turn the wheel? Don’t force it. If it’s stuck soak the whole burner in metho for an hour or so. Tony
Hi Tony, Thank you for the info. I had come to the same conclusion about the fuel. Not sure what to do with the asbestos/cotton?? sleeve or tube? It was in The well and I fished it out. I will post some more photos. The wheel that operates the central metal tube was stuck but I used a little spray of WD 40 and it now moves perfectly. I hope that will be ok as I had not read your recommendation to use metho. But it seems to be fine. Thank you again for your knowledge and for sharing.
I also think that is an alcohol stove (denatured ethanol would be the fuel to look for), in which case the cloth tube is certainly a wick. I'm also curious about what the knob controls. ....Arch
