How did we get here, what is great about it... 1929 Band a blue burner w/simmer ability developed (by Toronto?). 1940s Sheet steel, begins stoves/burners made w/o any cast iron and note1 heat output improves. 1950s new method for tank seams for lighter tanks/stoves and note1. 1962 (late 62 - Feb 85 !!) No.502 is offered, with a rocky start, becomes possibly the best 1 burner ever made, KNOWN FOR the ease of the gradual flame control from simmer to high. US No.502 is smaller, hotter and lighter than US No. 500 (ended in 61). 1960s late / into 70s: An increased demand for pack stoves. 1976 Toronto offers their No.576 Peak1 Backpack Stove stamped 1_76. 576 offers a revolutionary burner, the hottest 1 burner stove with *cook set. With Lo to Hi flame control as good as the 502 (kinda had to be ). 576 example * cook kit 576-750 . 40 some years later we know this Toronto design is the burner most used in subsequent models and outlasted all other designs. In my view credit is due to Toronto's designers & craftsman . 1979 January using Toronto 576 design Wichita offers the No.400 Backpack Stove, hotter, smaller & lighter than the 502. 400 (Brown) production run was 1_79 to 8_84. 400's replacement, 400A production began directly, "i think" there are 400As w/ 8_84 date stamp, for sure by 2_85 and still made 1_89. As far as I know the 400s 1_79 thru 4_80 are the same. Labeling was changed by 10_80. Minor label change in 84 (the text on 84 label unchanged). Here is an in-box 10_79: FYI

A windscreen is a definite plus for the 400. Above we see Coleman's: it is designed to fit 400 & 550 series and Apex to name a few. 2 images above are the same windscreen. As shown on left, it fits on 400 series. Same part on right, rotate it clockwise and it fits 550 series & Apex. There is a downside, pot size is limited to the 6 3/4" diameter. There is a SIGG Tourist cook set designed for No.400 series and others. The wind screen that come w/SIGG cook set is 7 1/2" (vs Coleman at 6 3/4). Above left is early version. Above right: the latest version. Above right, if 2 notches are carefully cut out (shown in red) then the SIGG windscreen also fits the 550 series. Coleman Model 400-499 Instructions dated 11_78 came with a 10_79 stove. The instructions came with it, one would think , being 10_78 that this is 1st version of instructions and would have shipped with 1st 400 stove, 1_79. ? Not sure what year(s) this warning and wrench were added. thx omc --end--
You inspired my lunch coffee today! I had to dig out the old 400B, which is a GREAT stove, always fires up and settles to good, blue flame in just a few seconds. It simmers better than any other stove I own. I also found my "backpacking" lantern, and realize that it would make a nice pair with an original, brown, 400 My 400B is a 12/89. Kind regards Tron
I recently got impatient while boiling water on my Trangia in the shop, and switched the kettle over to my 400. The 400 was at WOT in seconds, before the Trangia had even bloomed. I can tell you that a 400 on full step will wrap flames around a 27 kettle to the point where the rubber heat insulator on the bail starts bubbling and melting. Not recommended.
I have a Sigg Tourist cook set w/400 Sigg wind screen,,, gotta a 400 I’ve used, but not with the cook set. Also have a 400B I bought from a fella who had the 222B lantern to go with it,,, dated to ‘93, a couple of months apart. The lantern works perfectly, the 400B stove is leaking fuel from somewhere, and I haven’t looked to see just where. Bought the set for $15,,, the fella who sold them to me bought them new, on the same day. Too heavy he said... Interesting stoves the 400’s,,,
Hello to everybody. Having a coleman peak one in perfect condition since the 80', I unfortunately lost the top cover of the case in a river in the French mountains a long time ago. Since that time a tried several times to find a new (or used case) for my stove without success. Amongst many other stove (I'm now a collector) My peak one is my prefered one for it's a powerful beast working in any very cold temperature. Have somebody an idea where I could find and purchase such an item. Thank you in advance

Marc short answer, you being in Belgium, i have no suggestion as to best way for you to source a replacement cook kit. In the US it would be difficult (not impossible) to find just this cook kit on ebayUS.
