I was pre-heating my 8r using the regulator to hold the heat shield up so the tank would warm more quickly. I couldn’t recall hearing or reading about anyone else doing that I can’t be the only one…
@E.B. Do you find that it makes any real difference to the start up time? Mine has the later key type control (similar to a 123R) so it would probably get too hot to touch if I left it there for too long. Regards John
I allways remove the heat shield before priming. Put it back when the burner is hot. My oldest 8 has a flatter tank lid, so the heat shield can swing over to the front of the tank.
John, It definitely improves the start up time. Quite honestly, I can’t imagine trying it with a regulator key, even if it is possible. I have cooked my pinkies enough times in the past with my 71s and 123s.
I try to roll the shield up some if it will stay. On my 8’s I use a Tilley torch placed by the burner and pipe from the tank. Did that this morning on a nickel 8 while backpacking. Duane
Actually, half of a torch, sorry. I've done this on my 8's. The pedestal ones I fill the preheat cup too, that seems to heat the burner better. Duane
In colder conditions, this method is recommended. ...In fact, the PT 1 (8R clone) user manual states: "raise the screen (heat shield) during warm-up"
Yes. Maybe even required. But, my experience is that a small flame after pre-heat continues to heat the stove. I enjoy watching the progress of the flame. Why hurry? [If not in the colder conditions? ]
Very good point. The truth be known, I am seldom or ever in a hurry. Like yourself, I enjoy the process but I also like to experiment and see what happens.
I pop a small length of fibreglass rope in the spirit cup, it prolongs the prime/helps limit it boiling-off Alec.
