    Hi all,

I've had this stove a long while. I love it because it's so compact:

    Not bad weight either: 275g

It's got a couple of issues that make it difficult to use in practice. Most important, it flares horribly. The gas knob has four turns, but opening it beyond about 1/16th makes it unusable.

Does anyone have any suggestions where to start fettling it?

I've been watching some YouTube videos and I think the reason is that the cannister is on its side, so liquid gas comes out of the burner. It's designed that way, and is massively more stable than the alternative where the burner sits atop the cannister, so I like it.

The question remains: can anyone suggest a way of making the valve knob open less per turn, so I can avoid this flare?

Might it simply be perished parts inside the valve?

    Just a guess.
Could there be a pickup tube in the canister that 'stays up' in the vapor? Like the Coleman Powermax.
Maybe the pickup tube is not functioning properly.

Interesting, possibly. The canister is a Go System 2175 Butane-Propane mix, EN417 valve. I have no idea if that's a PowerMax equivalent. It says its compatible with EN521 stoves only.

I can't work out from the details here
How the Coleman FA tube functions
whether the pick-up tube you mention would make a difference.

I can reproduce the flare by putting the can vertical, with the burner at 90degrees from horizontal - the big yellow flame appears, at whatever level the gas inlet valve is set at. Maybe that implies there's a tube at the bottom of the can, like in a drinks carton? Is that the sort of thing you meant?

Excuse me if I'm being dense - I'm completely new to all this.

That would be the idea, yes. Your burner has a small loop to the right of the flame ring in your pictures that is normally supposed to make sure that the gas is vaporized before it gets to the burner. However, you have two tubes coming from the gas bottle. It would be helpful to know what path the tubes take on their way to and inside the stove.

Does it settle down if you let it warm up for a few minutes?

    Regards
    John

I assumed you were having the yellow flame with the canister laying on its side
