I felt a little guilty affixing this to my tent at Newark since I have never formally competed in this sport, but it attracted plenty of interest and it also deserves a place here. It was awarded to a member of The Camping Club of Great Britain & Ireland, which morphed into the Camping and Caravanning club. The same organisation which published 'The Technical Handbook of Camping' from which these excellent stove instructions were reproduced. The competition must have involved following these instructions to a greater or lesser extent, but exactly how was success measured? A race to light a stove from cold? Most stoves lit in a certain time? Something far more unusual and challenging? Either way, a well preserved piece of history from the heyday of the paraffin pressure stove, and good clean fun and high jinks in the healthy fresh air. The year has been penned in by hand, so it seems likely a run of these were printed and the competition was a regular event. I'm not sure what the cipher EDA (?) refers too, possibly a local branch of the club, any ideas?
I missed that. What a great item! I'm sure it involved members of youth group assembling & lighting a Primus 96 & boiling an egg. We did it at Newark many years ago. Sure there's a pic in an old event post & that Archie took part. Not sure how the egg boiling part worked or was times but may be misremembering.
@Blackdog A great find Chris and a marvellous survivor. I enjoyed inspecting it at Newark and seeing it appropriately assigned to your Blacks Icelandic tent, flying proudly in the breeze. We laughed at the prospect of there being heats in the Primus Lighting Competition, with those generating flare-ups and singed eyebrows failing at the first hurdle.
It seems I've joined the regulars at Newark too late for all the fun. Optimus No.111 record breaking, stove lighting competitions, stove lobbing... Perhaps one day there will be a revival of the sports.
Haha! Good times outside The Fettler's Arms. Bryan was a kind chap. @Big Si @redspeedster @tetley @Wim
