hi all, new here didn't know this site existed ... was seeking O-ring information and search brought me here ... so i need to share this .... Son and I are planning a 10 day adventure in 5 days... i dug out my old MSR from over 30 years ago ... when i back packed New Zealand and Australia for a rough 6.5 months of abusing this stove in the mid 90's ... Didn't think it would fire as easy as it did .... first had to pull the seal O-ring off the cap and put it onto the pump... old one was split and leaking ... then looked around and found some very old diesel (4 years at least) sitting around ... so put half bottle into it. did the old pump pump pump ... grabbed a bit of gasoline for the pre heat and gave it a few strikes .... sputter sputter and then that familiar sound of the whoosh sputter ... after a few minutes nothing was full flame ... turned it off and checked the jet ... yep G not K .... swapped the jet, splash of gas .... and then the old stove fired right up as if it was only last week it fired before .... I am so damned impressed with this little stove ... never failed over 30 years ago ... and still is breathing fire today.... amazing stoves. cheers.... (ps any info about the parts for the pumps 3 O-rings?) I am guessing they are still available to buy new.
@ru_ready WELCOME ! thank you for sharing your experience. the grey pump was sold at least until Dec 1990 (i myself jus dunno how long after that). can you post a better pic of pump out of the bottle, is that easy enough? i am "guessing" it is a grey pump. before your "...rough 6.5 months of abusing this stove in the mid 90's..." i presume you bought it new. do you have a guess, and that was approx 199_? as for parts and rebuild i'll leave that to others but they too will... ... need to confirm it's a grey pump (or?) i join members that will > suggest buy *new pump (my impression is you'll need a most reliable option) > be very happy to see reports from trip to _____?, reports of stove in action, scenery along with the good, the bad and the grizzly. *grey pump can be rebuilt and used but you'll want to test it before trip, making sure you're good to go... new pump has multiple pluses. thanks again. all the best to you and your son going fwd. PS fwiw bottle looks to be manufactured approx early 90s (90-93)
