Hi all, I just picked up a Primus 71 with attached wrench and metal holder. How do I use it? Can anyone give me any links to instructions? Does it burn Kerosene? Is there an alternative fuel I can use? Thanks, Greg
Look at brother Ian's excellent video: Burn Coleman fuel only. This stove is a gasoline fuel only type stove. It doesn't burn kerosene. Since you're in the US You should burn Coleman only for your health and the health of the stove.
Welcome to CCS, Greg. As Paul says, Coleman fuel only. These self-pressurizing stoves are petrol-only. The volatility of Coleman fuel permits self-pressurization from the heat of stove operation alone. The much-less-volatile kerosene generally requires a pump on the stove.
Thanks again for the info. So far I have the Primus, an M1950 Squad Stove and a Swedish Army alcohol stove kit. I also have the MSR Pocketrocket for backpacking. Greg
Hi & welcome to the forum. Can't beat watching someone else doing it - especially when it's our own stove-brother Ian. For online images of original instructions...................... check the Instruction section
When I say "Coleman" I mean white gas which is sold here in the sates as Coleman, Crown lantern and stove fuel, Ozark Trail Camp fuel, And MSR Superfuel. Take your pick they're all about the same thing. If you have a Wal-Mart, REI, (I almost said EMS) GAnder Mountain or such outdoor store they can fix you up.
Well, the very small kerosene stoves like the 96 will self pressurise with a good prime :wink but as the others have said, Coleman/white gas only for this little beauty:
There is a lot to like about the 71, mine goes very nicely 8) They are a perfectly do-able w/e stove if a tad tippy, taller than wide and all that.
Hello All, I have resurfaced after a busy year where I can now play. I believe someone can advise me on how to start my Primus No 70. I watched the video ?brother Ian's? on the Primus 71 A key did not come with this Primus, can I start it without one? What fuel would I use in Australia? Would it be Shellite? It say?s Burns Auto Fuel Benzine; Benzoline; Gasoline; Petrol; Naphta on the front of the tin. Regards Leonie
Hi there, and welcome back. Nice looking stove; Ian has a number of these stoves and I'm sure will be along soon. I understand the problem with Primus 70's is not how to start them, it's how you stop them safely. I understand that throwing a wet towel over is one way !
Oh that one is nice i got on love it just prime it like any other stove or you can just put you hands a round it to fill prime cup. it better to use alcohol. you can blow it out if you got good lungs but i just side it out put a can over it.if not in use fo long time take of burner put cap on for shot time jus leave fill cap lose . It runs full bore i love mine P. S. i start mine outside of the case slide in after also after the flame goes out open fuel cap to let of pressure also just fill tank 3/4 full here is min you can see my can also i maide a grill to go on top for small pots
Hello Robert & Keith Thank you for your help. How much fun are these when you place your hands on the sides and just watch. I am more familiar with pressure lights and I am now having fun with this one. I have 3 pieces that fit into the top piece. A funnel brass piece An inner cap The top If I don?t use the funnel piece I can not (as you experience Robert) blow out the flame however if I use the funnel there is no need to use any form of snuffer. When I use the funnel the flame is more defused, quieter, softer blue flame with yellow flame above. Regards Leonie
Well my son just pointed out to me: the funnel is a funnel!!!! it's just kept in there. Silly me was thinking it was somehow more complex. Don't think I'll find a funnel in the next project Ha ha Regards Leonie
Hello Ian, That sure looks old. How old would that be? So no key? hard to put out? What is it? Here are further pics of the "funnel piece" I was talking about and look how well it fits into the burner. Just love it how these parts can remain together for all those years. Leonie
Hi Leonie, That's a neat little stove, I especially like the silent burner option. Thanks for posting the photos.
