He always makes me chuckle. I don't know much about winter camping... and i like alcohol stoves fine. But I'm not sure about a few things. Isn't the light fluffy snow the worst kind? Isn't ice the best? 2 Ounces of alcohol?!
    Tinny melts snow

    Tinny on life...

Well he has me convinced...Screw lightweight alcohol burners... I'm going back to my 111!

    These kids... Sigh...

    Dumb kids

This must be why the reactor has the words "respect fire" written on it in small friendly letters.

The pot he uses is the new one that goes with Primus Eta stove. It has the heat exchanger corrugation at the bottom. That is supposed to cut down the boiling time by about half (it also cools rapidly, as well). So if you use a regular pot, it will take at lest twice the amount of alcohol.

I think he was trying to prove a point, but he had to use a helper from Primus. Fossil fuel is more suited for the job.

I can go with exercise theme...I can use it.

But the kids? A little bigger gas tank, a longer release, an enclosed space, and they could have won the Darwin Award--at lest an honorable mention.

I do fancy a set of the ETA pots, read some very good reviews about them, the only thing I'm worried about is size, the biggest is only about 2 litres :?

    Hey 111T,

Tinny is a character. Most of his findings are based on his logic and not necessarily factual. Surprisingly he is correct most of the time.

As for winter camping, I've done a fair bit of winter trips. Tinny's technique for melting snow will waste alot of fuel. The proper way would be to start off with a little water in the pot. As you heat the water you then add the snow a liitle bit at a time. This technique is faster and more fuel efficient. I personally will stick to white gas stoves for winter use.

I have to give credit to the guy. From looking at his website, it appears he has built a good business with various homemade alcohol stoves, and other pieces of equipment cobbled together out of rubbish.

don't get bme wrong... I am not a tinny hater. he clearly spends a goodly amount of time obsessing about his camp stoves. We probably all have more in common than the average joe shmo on the street. He is quite a character though. He regularly makes me chuckle.

A couple years ago I bought 3 of his stoves for fun. I took them backpacking and they did the job nicely. My friend had his MSR Whisperlite and was impressed at how fast they boil a pot of water.

Since then Tinny has developed a wide variety of stoves. I just bought his basic ones at the time. Quite a character he is.

Well, This is where I confess to being REALLY sad as i have nearly every stove he has ever made! Including a few prototypes!
They work just fine and I enjoy them greatly.
BUT depending upon the situation, it a case of the right tool for the job and in a windy situation, I prefer the power of a petrol stove blasting away. The Tinny stoves have always 'just worked' even when the gas and petrol stoves have played up for some reason. Not fast but they work!
I like Tinny's approach to life, and his vids a great fun. As for melting snow.... Well you need snow to start with! and here in Cheshire we don't get any, or havn't had any real snow for a few decades. where I live is actually , in places 'below the dead'!!!!
(For the sake of non UK people. In Cheshire, especially around the Northwich area where I live, for a long long time they have been extracting salt. As a result of which, the land collapsed and a lot of the place is now lower then 6 feet below sea level!)
