my 8 r has not been going to well so today i took off tje nipple and cleaner all ok . not much fuel was coming through. so i took out the wick and it looked ok. replaced wick after cleaning no improvement. i pulled out the wick again cut off six strands of the wick (about 20 in total) folded them over to make twelve strands twisted them and put them in the (vapouriser) tube.stove runs nice is this ok and or safe.

thanks dave. thought i was the only one doing that. removed a wick totally from a spirit stove lit and blew the cap off. you do need a wick but not to much and it go good. there was no sign of blockage on the 8r wick but cutting it back made it go good

Was this a new wick that you cut back, or the existing one. If the latter, it sounds like the wick may have been damaged. I wonder if the stove ran dry and scorched the wick? (This has never happened to me, but I've heard of it happening.)

no it is pretty old stove 60' or 70's minimal use before i got it bought off one of my customers. most australians are frightened of gasoline stoves they use them once or twice and they sir in shed for 20 years all original. no new parts just low ammount of fuel coming through. had a spirit stove serviced by proffesionals. came back worse than when i took it in. they removed some strands runs nice now. may be the fuel in australia is less pure

After reading this and seeing picture of other 8R's I realised that mine was not up to par either, I knew is should basically burn like a 123R but I was not sure. I got all Crazy with mine tonight and tore it into bits, Basically it was very clean it was pretty new when I bought it and did not think that much could be wrong. I took out about six stands of the wick and cleaned the tank with some vinegar. I put it back together and it is a noticable improvement, now it burns with some noise and actually turns the pot holders a nice cherry red. Thanks All for the help!
