Does anyone have a stove that uses the Coleman Powermax fuel cells? I have two to give away for postage. one (1) large size and one (1) small.

    Hi Lance,

I have one but getting them across the border would cause some bureaucratic meltdowns.

If anyone in the states needs a winter stove, the one's that use these cartridges are the way to go. The double burner is supposed to be a real treat.

I think there are laws against posting that sort of stuff.

BTW, be careful about considering these Powermax stoves as being winter capable. They are are but only up to a point.

I have both the single and dual burner Powermax stoves and they are quite nice for car camping or for those who don't mind their luxuries while backpacking. Almost as good as a full size propane stove.

I used the dual burner while car camping a few years back while it was snowing and temps in the mid to high teens (F) during the day. I also had a Camping Gaz butane stove along. The Camping Gaz stove needed to be heated next to the campfire if it was to burn at all.

The Powermax cartridges did fair to mediocre if the cartridge was nearly full. Flame control was spotty. But if the cartridge got low, the stove would refuse to burn unless the cartridge was also warmed up near the campfire. I had maybe 2 cartridges fail on me during that several day campout. When shaken it sounded like there was maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the fuel left. I think this jibes with the proportion of Butane to Propane(I think) mix of the fuel. The propane burns off first since it is gaseous at below freezing, while the butane presumably just sits there as is typical for a pure butane stove in freezing conditions. I had thought the liquid fuel concept of the Powermax would compensate for this but guess not.

So caveat emptor. The Powermax stove does work in freezing temps but take a lot(30-40%?) more fuel than you think required since your cartidges won't burn to completion. I assume the same to be true of the lanterns.

Luckily for me I had my Coleman suitcase with me. Those things never die.

    Interesting.

I have used mine with the cannister lying on the snow and it was racing one of my Coleman 530 White Gas quite well. Mind you I have a number of cartridges I need to finish off so the drop off could be something I haven't seen yet.

If you're interested in parting with your 2 burner PowerMax, keep me in mind Jim!

I am moving to Southern Calif, so I doubt I will see sub freezing temps much any more. So the Powermax should work splendidly.

Actually the two burner is a quite nice stove, and it does work even when freezing. You just can't get the last significant portion of fuel out if subfreezing.

I would take them if no one else wanted them, but I have a hefty supply now since for awhile there I was afraid Coleman was going to phase them out, so I bought a handfull everytime I saw some. I must have a couple dozen now. If my garage ever catches fire, look out, dozens of Powermax cannisters, ditto Camping Gaz piercables, a good handfull of regular propane, 3 or 4 cans of Coleman fuel, maybe 8 gallons of kero and a gallon or so of meths. There must be a law against this so best I not post my address ;^) I really need to build a shed.

If someone else could benefit from them great. If you get no takers let me know.

    Thanks,

I haven't had the fall off problem yet either. I picked up my first xponent stove 3 years ago. In fact I just got another old brand new one. But I don't go out in winter as much as I used to. this coleman is much lighter than my old 400 ( which is still the most reliable stove I have ever used) and much hotter than my 450 and 2 MSR whisperlights - which reminds me - I have to rebuild one of those - again.
Also tried one of the F1 ultralight (2.7 oz) with the little cannister. works well, but I set the burner down and then can't find it again - it gets lost to easily. Besides the powermax cylinders pack better.
I see you occasionally post ebay items up for information purposes. Do you have an agreement among yourselves not to bid against each other (without discussion)?

It is sort of a gentlemans agreement that one does not bid without asking first. Usually this takes place with a PM and then is kept in that format until the item is off the block or one or the other drops out. Just as often we post them so that others who may have an interest in a particular item will become aware of it. If i am bidding and post the item usually i will say something like "I'm on this one.", and others will not bid, but there is no actual requirement that they can't.

Ron, do you want the canisters?

Very informal. If I've realised that someone else is bidding on a item that I put a bid on, a quick PM to let them know that I mistakenly bid against them and what my Max Bid is.

As to posting items, I put the date in the title for Ross's sake and state it's eBay. In the message body, I state if I'm bidding. A majority I bid at the starting price with the knowledge that once in a blue moon I get a bargain.

I take some of my stoves when I do training. For the Scouts, I discovered that if I take a lot of stoves for them to light that are different, they are more comfortable with the stoves. I add a few horror stories to keep them mindful of what they are working with and they seem to respect them more. Same for lanterns; white gas and propane with a discussion about their preferences.

Hi Thanks for the information. I also belong to a Coleman Collectors Club and we have an agreement (most of us anyway) that we won't bid against each other and put out an updated list every few months of Ebay user names. there really isn't to much I bid on any more -- although there is an old No. 2 Coleman stove with warmer up right now that is kind of tempting
as for the powermax fuel sure if Jim doesn't want them I will most certainly use them. Let me know postage or what ever
    Thanks Ron
