Fooled 'yu. Just a homemade windscreen. Seems to work pretty good though and stop the silent burners flame from blowing to pieces in a slight puff of breeze. Barra
Hey, Barra, Now, THAT'S very nice, indeed!! Well done! When are you going to start offering that modification on CCS, say in the store??!! 8) Great job, Bruce! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Hey, cool windscreen! Seems you might even be able to refuel with the screen in place..? OK, I know a small detail, but an advantage still in my book. Easier to prime as well, if you prefer to squirt a bit of fuel directly into the preheat cup. Possibly a silly, hopeless, stupid question, but has the Svea123 ever been manufactured with a silent burner, or is it a modification well known by the experienced 123 guys? Or is this a one-of? I wouldn't want to replace the burner on my newly acquired 123, but it might be a passable excuse to get another one. Knut
The Svea 123 far as i know never came out with a silent burner. It is one from another stove that mates to it. Given to me by a CCS member because I love silent stoves and although I don't hate roareres they get to me after awhile using them unless there purring away over there somewhere cooking the camp oven etc.(or its raining and blowing and you can't hear 'em anyway) The screen is/was a sugar s/s container I bought at an op shop thinking the 123 would fit into. held 750 ml. Used it with a SIgg fire jet for a while but the base is a bit small for proper fuel efficieancy. Veiw from underneath The bottom was cut off and pressed into the base far enough so that when the burner is tightened down it keeps the windscreen held tighly in place. It also form a seal so the bottom air mixing holes are not effected by the breeze coming over the top of the widscreen and in from the side as in the normal windsheild. Thus hoping to cure the problem. Holes at the base an after thought as to try and stop some convected heat. {may have stuffed up there) I prime by squirting metho into the dish then light. Slowly warms into life. If i want a full flame straight up I dribble metho from the top till it fills the dish underneath then light. The extra heat gets it going well. Gets a bit more purposefull when truley hot Boils the billy. Not as quick/hot as it was cos Iv'e detuned it all to burn bluer and better on a simmer. With the breezes we've had in the last few days its impressed me enough to be happy with it. Supposed to be a big weather front coming ..but didn't. Plumber cancelled my work and it stop raining and fine and lovely. Should be fishing but me backs out Think its me "shaggers back" playing up!! 8) (wife reckons "in your dreams ) The key don't get hot on my SVEAS . Get warm but not hot at all. Think I might run them a bit weak or something. The 99 does thou thats for sure. With a SIGG bottle can fill up but the gap is a bit small unless I carve a bit out of it. But may loose wind protection. Can fill just can't see how much is in it easily. Just have to tip it up a bit. The smaller mouthed plastic bottle you buy it in is no dramas thou. Boil time?? well primed burning new bottle of shellite 6.5 min In the tropics in summer no wind sheild etc.normal light puff wind. 6 1/2 inch s/s billy. Pulsated for too long using shellite. Maybe over filled. Nearly ran out of Naptha (artic fuel not as filtered). Time will see. But don't have to try and melt snow so I don't care that much about super quick boil times as long as it works well. Note: I did super prime it and it was pumping out the flame for a bit till the excess blew out of it for a few minutes then died slightly and stabllised. Tank don't get as hot as be normal 123 till quite a long time so I think I;ll leave it like it is. Cheers hope it helps. Now if some one wants so sent me a hand full of silent burners and IF I could find more containers .....or something appropriate..others could have a hand made one with all its inperfectons s well. Bruce
I like that right much and am going to try to do the same to a little Primus 71. Bought the 71 off of craigslist a week or so ago, cleaned it up and it fired right up. Don't like its little tin box though. It seems to simmer better that the two 123's that I have. If I knew how to make a "can", I'd buy some sheet brass and give that a go. May have to learn. Thanks for the tutorial, Bruce. Best, Bob
Bob, measure the body of the tank, then next time you got to the grocery, take your tape measure and check various cans for size suitability. If you're lucky the ideal sized can will have something nice in it.
I tried that all ready there is not a can one that fit odd size. I took one close an did a stove pipe crimper at bottom and made it fit also put in shelf.
The first thing you notice is that both the filler cap and the control knob extend out wider that the fount. Have to notch out for those. Ah well, may or may not be a good thought. It would have to be pretty or there's no point. It already come in an ugly tin box which works. Best, Bob
You could do something like this. With a bit of thought the whole thing coud be made to fit into a coffee can or similar Or wait for one of these to come along. (or build one)
Ian: Now you are stepping in Juwel 35 territory. See: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140202031769&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=004 Gordon \
Stepping in? Been in the neigbourhood for quite a while. I don't own any of the Juwels but I have a particular soft spot for Pri.71s (especially the small ones) & 70s, Radius 42s and even the odd Opti. 80.
What make and and model # stove did the silent burner come from? I would also like to try this for cooking REAL rice (not the instant junk) as the 123 does not simmer well enough to not scorch the rice to the bottom of the pan when needing a 30-40 minute cook time. Are there many stoves that use the silent burner that have compatible threading to the 123? Thanks Ian....
Ian: If you like little "canister" stoves you have go to love the M-1942. Considering both the design and the materials of construction, stainless steel and brass in an aluminum container, whats not to like???!! One of my work horse favorites!! Always carry one behind the rear seat of my pick-up to placate my "just in case" paranoia.!!! Gordon
Ian: Does the M-1942 variant on the right side of your photo has a mod number? I have been looking for one of these for years without success. Is the flame control better with the "wheel" controller?? Gordon
