Hi Gents I bought this stove on eBay recently. It looks really old, but the configuration of the primer cup and the riser has me thinking maybe it's a Frankenstove? The riser solder joint was broken where it enters the tank. I was able to resolder without too much change to the stove. I polished the riser to get a good solder bond, but otherwise it's still intact as I received it. I got a cap from Base-Camp. It burns nicely, too. What do you think? Cheers, Gary
Hi Bernie Dawg, A warm welcome to CCS. Check out this link: PRIMUS No5 from 1912 You have a very early Primus 5. It is essentially complete and is not a Frankenstove. Please look at the centre of the base of the tank to see if there is a date code marking. It is possible however that your stove pre-dates the coding which commenced in 1911. You are missing a burner cap from this early-model silent burner. These burner caps are very rare. Like hens teeth, rocking horse droppings, honest lawyers...you get the idea. This is not exactly the same as it is a silent "damper"for a No.100 stove, but it gives you the idea. Silent Damper Here is another mention...look down the thread: Burner Caps Look after this stove. Show it suitable respect. Please do not modify it or remove the patina. It is a part of stove history. I am sure many collectors would do the Alladin "New stove for Old" swap with you. I am first in the line! Best Regards Kerophile.
"Yeah Do it justice "or pass it on. I'm sure you can get a real good swap stove for that one. Not some run of the mill fity or sitxy year 'ol plugger that one!! Worth preseving IMHO anyway. Barra
One of these, complete with burner top piece, was among my recent group of $2 purchases. I am glad to learn that the spirit cup in in the right place. There is no date mark on the font. Maybe we need a photo of your mark to confirm. All this indicates that the various spirit cup types were used in no particular order. I have two pre 1911 stoves with the old type font, one with the funnel type cup, the other with the hemispherical type. Now I have a pre 1911 with modern type, though set at the base of the riser. Then I have two dated 1914 with the funnel types. Confusing. Fr Laurence
Hi Gary, as some of the CCS members suspected you stove looks to be pre-1911. The photo you have sent makes me believe that this "L" is not a date mark but rather some other manufacturing code, the purpose of which we do not now know. The date letters were normally within the circle of letters making up the A/B B A Hjorth and Co, Stockholm logo. You better get ready to celebrate the 100th birthday of your Primus No.5. Best Regards, Kerophile
Hi Gary, If you hadn't told us we would never have known that major surgery had been carried out on this stove. A wonderful fettle and it is great to see such a true classic operating again as intended, Don't mess with the patina on this stove. she looks wonderful. Here's to the second century! Best Regards, Kerophile.
