I've decided that I am going to completely disassmble, and scour my old KampKook. It is has a "sooty" smell to it when it is in use like someone has used something other than white gas in it. It also floods very easily until the generator is heated well. Until that point, it has a sooty, gasy odor to it as well even though it is burning fine. Today, I went to braise some beef in my cast iron to use in a stew and I kept getting whiffs of that sooty smell from the cast iron. I"m sure it was residue that didn't get completey cleaned from the sides and bottom, but still, I've never had this issue w/ my other stoves... I'm thinking its got to be some sort of residue in the plumbing! I cleaned the outside of the cast iron frying pan very well and the odor went away. I've had good success w/ cleaning nasty old gun parts using purple stuff and water heated to boiling on the stove. I think I am going to start w/ that for all parts, then go to the brass brushes, then the Breakfree and Brakekleen to finish it off. I plan on doing a photo documentary on this as a go... Partially as a reference for me to look back on for re-assembly, and partially to share w/ you guys...
I'm the proud owner of many pounds of brass or bronze bore brushes. I say proud because I do not use them anymore, The reason is because , using the Breakfree I have found it to be a waste of time. I have proven this to myself. A well fit patch and Breakfree on your cleaning rod is all that is needed. Just make sure to clean out the residue of the Breakfree with your Alcohol with another clean patch when done. Best of luck on your rebuild.
I plan on getting some while out tonight... I've used Breakfree then used Brake-kleen to get rid of the used breakfree and the residue.
Hey, BnSC, I look forward to seeing how your rebuild goes, and wish you every success with it. As I'm working on my old Coleman #9, some of what you encounter may well help me, too, and I thank you, in advance for that! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
I used to buy Carb cleaner by the case and found that it did not do as good a job as the straight Alcohol on a patch. What my main concern is getting out any trace of residue left from the Breakfree. There are things in there that I do not want to accumulate in my bores. The other deal is the price of the stuff. I can tell you after a great many years of buying from chemical companies, that it's the active ingredients make up only a tiny fraction of what you need. The carrier is always the cheapest part of the bulk., for the chemical companies to sell you. Think of it as buying watered down whiskey.
Here are a few pics... In one you can see the soot on the generator and the top of the burner. I always wipe down my stoves after using them so that is soot from ONE use. As you can see in the pic w/o flash, it burns great after getting heated up, but it takes 7 to 10 mins. to get it to that point. It flooded once during this last burn on its own. I didn;t touch anything and it started hiccupping gas and made a wonderful light show..lol I should have gotten a pic of it!
