just wondering what kind of polish you use on your stoves? Im fettling a primus 96 and using the kiwi 830 polish and it seems to be doing a good a job as spitting on the rag...
Hi Alexander Using the Kiwi 830 myself. The stoves gets qiute nice and shining. I have some display stoves, but most of the others are not that shiny. Regards
Back in the dark ages when I was just a kid, my Mom used toothpaste to polish brass, Pepsodent preferred. Another excellent brass polish is Bon-Ami cleanser on a soft dampened cloth. Actually, she didn't polish anything. She made me do it. I washed dishes, and mopped floors, too. And mowed the lawn. I liked doing dishes because I liked being with my Mom in the kitchen. She taught me how to cook and buy groceries too. If you read those "How to Live Cheap" books, I've been doing all the things they write about since childhood. Gerry
But Autosol is available where ever you are... ...If you're not afraid of mixing ammonia and brass, that is.
it says on the bottle of the kiwi 830 that it contains some ammonia, but im not to worried about that. dont know how much ammonia the autosol contains though..
I'm generally very restrictive to polish old brass items, but when I do, I do it with Autosol just for the simple fact that I always have it at home. (It's mainly used for chrome here, and that's the metal I have the most weakness for together with nickel and brass... Gold and silver is for ladies... ) But I also know that Autosol contains ammonia, that?s obvious when you smell the stuff, and ammonia is known to speed up the pace of stress cracks to appear in brass. Well, that's only because you live in a remote corner on the other side of that big ocean, aparted from the rest of the real world.
True, True... Sun and Sand, Beaches and Mountains, Land of the String Bikini.... Yup, this is the 'Back of Beyond' for sure !!! But no Autosol...
Well over here the girls don't use bikini at all summer time, and I don't complain. But it's strange you don't find any Autosol... I have many countrymen living in California just for the reason to work with cars, and I doubt very much that they would do without this high quality german product.
Like i said, special order, little bitty tube for $ 13 US http://www.amazon.com/Crlaurence-Autosol-Shine-Metal-Cleaner/dp/B000MQYRC4 You can get a quart of brasso for that much !
I don't even really know what Brasso is... But I've heard the name in the movies, so I'm not unfamiliar with the brand. I'm sure it work just as well for those who can get it...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brasso then there's a product, near and dear to the hearts of Sailors everywhere... NEVR-DULL #-o
In Sweden we had something with the name Dur a glit and i think its was the same as brasso, but i havent seen it for many year. When i was young i use many times but in my opinion Autosol is much better H a n d Mazen
dura glit ! i was trying to remember that name, basic training standby. there is a electric fan collector site that really knows brass cleaning/polisning called afca that say to use lysol toilet cleaner [ original mixture in white bottle] you need good ventilation for this, 0000 steel wool and rubber gloves. pretty nasty but it did work on brass fan blades.
I personally would never use steel wool on brass. You can embed slivers of steel in the brass which will then rust and ruin the surface; it will also remove any impressed lettering. Brasso and patience work fine for me.
hi, nevr dull was, and is, all i use to polish brass and other metals. works great, doesn't scratch, no nasty fumes. what's not to like. you do have to use a bit of elbow grease depending on the luster you want. the more you rub, the brighter it shines. best wishes, Lou
