I found a gent online that has a good price on these ($130 USD delivered) and figured I'd ask before pulling the trigger. The stove would be used for car camping, etc. I've read considerably on the model thus far and was hoping for some up to the minute, 'real world' opinions.

If you own one,.......are you well satisfied? In your opinion is the 111T still a better, more reliable, long term option? Trade offs?

    Hi Priest
Asking me to choose between these two awsome stoves is like asking me which is my favourite child. The Hiker+ is a great stove ,it burns (HOT) any fuel simmers very well and has in my opinion the smoothest spindle out there. For $130 delivered you'd be kicking yourself if you don't get it.
The 111T in my books is the best of both worlds, multi fuel burns HOT and is QUIET .
I say bring them both on your next car camping trip put them side by side :D
You won't find more reliable stoves.

    Take care

just out of curiousity, why can't the Nova burner use alcohol/meths?

Most of the time the issue is plastic parts,......i guess here the uni-jet may be the problem. Is that the case? And, if so,....can that be rectified with a jet from days gone by? (a 111 jet)

    Hey, Priest,

I guess that would mean which 111 you are discussing. To me, there's only one 111, and that's the regular old original kerosene burner. But, many folks call the 111T a "111", and I've even seen it in some old ads, but to me, it's not right. The 111 is one stove, and the multi-fuel 111T is another one. I wonder if the Meths jet from a 111T would fit the Nova? Is that what you are meaning? Interesting idea, that's for sure. I love the Nova, and also the 111T, and for that matter, the 111, too. But, I don't have a Hiker+, and so can't comment on it, other than I'd "like" to own one!! ;) ;) :D :D Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc

    Hi guys
the jet from the Nova burner is larger (the threads) in diameter than the jet from the 111T.

    Take care

    Hello Doc,

That would be it sir. ;) I'm pretty familiar with the 111 lineup at this point. 111, 111b, 111t, and 111c. More or less what I was asking is if the Hiker+ is the 'evolution', why can't it burn the same fuels as the last in the line (t & c) and do it better.

I know stoves with plastic parts don't do well with alcohol because of the plastic erosion. i just don't understand why the Hiker+ can't run alcohol unless they didn't believe it was worth the trouble.

Having said that,.............for me at least,.......I'd rather have the Nova burner WITH the option of proper jets for gas, kero, and alcohol for a better burn/better fuel efficiency/less pollutants for a tent, etc. To me, THAT would be the best stove out there.

Perhaps it's a little silly to hope for all that though.

    Hi Priest

The Hiker+ is a multi fuel stove,it burns Optimus artic fuel (exellent for high altitudes),White gas (Coleman fuel), kerosene, desiel, jet fuel and as a last resort i'm sure it will burn automotive pump gas.
If i couldn't find one of these fuels somewhere in the world then a stove isn't meant to be used and i should build a fire.
To each their own., if i want to use meths as a fuel source i will use a pop can stove. It doesn't make sense for me to convert a 10,000 BTU stove into a 4,000 BTU stove and have it consume twice the fuel.
I buy a gallon of meths (about $10.00) and use it to prime all my stoves its exellent for that no soot.
Just my two cents worth i'm not saying its wrong to run a stove on meths,i'm sure there's members who have their 111T's set up for alcohol and thats fine ,i just wouldn't do it

    Take care :D

Thanks for the thought and a fine, fine point.

I guess I just got caught up in the 'new' model going backwards in some ways. Honestly, part of that comes from the what if scenarios. What if the sky fell and you had to make your own fuel. then,....it'd most likely be alcohol.

    I certainly don't consider myself a survivalist,......just pondering a few things. ;)

    Again, thanks for the thought.

That's probably the reason why they didn't do it.
The Omnifuel certainly, and the Nova probably (being a very similar burner) can be modded to run alcohol. Check out this thread to see how I did the mod on the Omnifuel.
I can't see that the manufacturer would go to the trouble of making an 'alcohol kit' for the Nova when it would likely increase the cost of the stove just to make it burn alcohol.
There are also issues with alcohol in the pump/fuel bottle arrangement although these can be overcome easily enough.

Thanks for the link Ian,....good stuff and nice work with the omnifuel.

From what I have gathered, to make a Nova run alcohol a person would have to cut air even more than the omnifuel (the nova jet is allowing only 50-60% as much fuel as should be flowing?) AND use silicone to keep everything from sticking?

Thinking out loud again,........if the jet is too small and the fuel is being delivered slower, and given what is there to work with,.....that means it's not a fuel problem, it's an air problem. I'm guessing less air would be the fix here too. Cutting the air by the proportion of difference in jet sizes could be the easy fix. i.e. aluminum tape or foil covering have the intake(or less) being the easy 'Ian-esque' fix again.

By the way,....I found another reference to the Monte, Svea/8R alcohol conversion. When Bob from A&H calls me back I'll be ordering a spare nipple to try that.

I have a 111 but have no idea what it is like if its a t, a, b or c, how can I tell the difference and identify my stove?

by the burner,.......the t and c both have silent burner (has a cap with small holes in it and burns quiet) the other two are roarer burners. the under part of the burner on the t and c are different.

    the 111 is kero only
the 111b is white gas/coleman only
    the other two are multi-fuel

yep,........now take the windscreen off and look under the burner,.....how many pipes? the c has just two, which form kind of a U. the t has the U coming down (two pipes on each side) and two smaller ones inside of that configuration for a total of four.

look for a picture. you'll find one easy enough. ;)

The control rod on the 111T is on the right of the stove, one the 111C its on the Left hand side.

The 111 kerosene burner has four tubes under the burner the 111B has only two

Which implies that you have to get yourself a 111 (kero roarer) to keep the 111T company.

Well, after all, the 111 kero is the best of the range :)
