Got Stupid and Bid on it. I know I'll lose but I can say I tried (along with a lot of other stoves) Next! Iain
I've learned that if I really want a stove, I first decide what I'll pay, then wait until less than a minute before the auction ends, having set up my bid, then hit the "submit bid" button. I guess this is sniping, but I let everyone else bid and show their hands, and if the amount goes too high, I pass. I just won a Vulcano pack stove that way for $12.15 US. Only one other bidder. I was willing to pay $30.00 and set my bid for that amount. I pick up my stove in Everett tomorow afternoon, avoiding postage and shipping charges. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5230903811&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT I'm of the opinion that early bidding only serves to drive the price up. Guys, what is the attraction to the Taykit stoves? We never see those in Oz,inquiring minds need to know.
I went to bed thinking I had that Vulcano. Oh well. The Taykit is in my opinion a little like an MG or Triumph. Small, cute and within it's limited design, capable. Iain
Gerry - I agree with your stategy 100% . Decide how much you will pay before you bid then do it at the last moment - avoids the 'nibblers' that push the price's up.
"I went to bed thinking I had that Vulcano" Well, I almost wish I didn't have it. I've been working on it trying to get it fettled and burning, but the tank and plumbing are filled with some sort of vile black goo. It's almost as if someone tried to run it on used shellac thinner. I had to clamp the stove to my workbench and unscrew the tank lid with a bit chucked in a carpenter's brace to get enough torque to move it. I've used a pint of alcohol rinsing things out and it's still a filhty mess. The burner, generator and vapor tube are totally blocked with whatever black gunk is in the tank. I'm having the devil's own time getting this thing figured out and disassembled. A schematic would be a godsend. I know now why spirit stoves never attained much popularity on this side of the pond. Too little heat from the burners, the stoves are too big for their purpose, and other stoves are cheap and available. The only alcohol burner I've ever had any success with is the Trangia style. I like it because it has no moving parts. That said, I'l put my beloved little Svea 123 up against almost any other stove on the planet for the type of hiking and camping I like. Rant: Off Gerry
Am I the only one here who doesn't understand the appeal of the taykit style stoves? For some reason, it just doesn't register with me. Maybe if I saw one up close and personal the light bulb would go on. Although, all that would accomplish is that I would NEED to look for one. Best not to open Pandora's box.
I know, for me, the Taykit's brass and stainless design, engineering and fit is what causes me to place this stove at the top (maybe tied with the Borde) of the coil stoves. It does have more parts to loose than the Borde but the design of the Monel case doing double time as the pot stand, the picker under the filler cap and funnel stopper combo more than make up for the extra bits. On this side of the pond we don't have that many native non-Coleman stoves so this bit of Americana has a special place in my stovie heart, along with the M-1942. It must be the brass and stainless!! I can remember it wasn't that long ago one could be had for $20.00 to $40.00!!! Now it seems that $80.00 to $100.00+ is the norm. If I ever take the time to get on eBay as a seller I might thin out my stash. '8)' Gordon
