Whaaaa Bought a Msr Whisperlite Inter Brand new never used .(Don't ask) It has changed into a MSR Drangon fly.( I don't know either) All the bits The Burner And the Pump Now apart from not being the latst model. Made 3/98 Still has the shaker jet n it. I think the pivot thing has changed since then. Any ideas on this anyone.Good as the new latest one etc??? Seems good enough and the pivot althou different I think than the latest version seams beafier and not a tiny brass pin if I'm correct. Pump is the blue one that looks like someone from a wheaty packet toy maker made it. The tabs holding the pump are broke and its never even been used. I was thinking of packing it out with ptfe tape or cardboard etc to make a firm fit in the housing. Any fixes for these?? Still have the broken off bits the the seller placed in the bag for me.( Isn't that nice) Is the rest of the pump destined to fail in 5 minutes or is the rest O.k. Suppose I got it cheap enough not to jump up and down too much. Think I'd be happy with it as a stove. Once I can figure how I'm supposed to fold it up!!! Does Msr offer a replacement for crap goods Never used??? Think the warrantee may have run out. Poor gullible me Or should I just tell them to stick it and get me money back Barra :Slightly confused
looks to me as if you got a result there mate much sooner have a dragonfly than a whisperlight its got the old style pump grab a new one you see them on ebay fairly cheap every so often make sure it is a DRAGONFLY pump as the other msr pumps are a different fitting, and your sorted ,as for folding it up, flip the burner basket up by the adjuster arm then fold the legs in toward the body if you push the legs they will clip in place over the next leg socket, then you can hook the little arm that holds the fuel pipe into the bottle through one of the holes in the body (hope that makes sense),i like my dragonfly its about the most fuel frugal burner i have,burns really well i prefer it to my xgk ex at least you can "cook" with it the xgk ex is a water boiler rather than a cooker new style dragonfly pump standard msr pump you don't want this one folded buy the pump and you will be very pleased with your new stove,and if you aren't ebay it btw if your a bit of a gear tart put a sock on the fuel bottle it stops them from scuffing all the paint off from rough ground
Hi In my opinion the Dragonfly is a quality stove and it performs great. But the old pump is not reliable at all. As I have mentioned earlie the pump failed on a camping trip in the wilderness. The pump is now replaced and I am quite satisfied with it. I also have a Whisperlite and in my opinion the dragonfly is a better stove! Regards
Yeah thanks Parra just the flicks I needed. Don't show you a pic of it folded in my destruction booklet. Can I wait till tomorrow for it to lose its virginity?? That is the question. Dad took a broken MSR pump to a dealer, they replaced it free with a new one. Worth a crack. Just bought and as quickly sold an XGK-EX, too much of a water boiler for me. But the pump was better than the old ones. Only prob: now you really can only use them with an MSR bottle, the Sigg style bottles have too wide a lip, even tho the thread is the same. Cheers, Tom
Tanks Tom./ jenspetter Came with a 1lte bottle. Got a couple of siggs. Old plain one and a red sigg. The lips are different like you say.Didn't think of that.fitting/sealing thou. Thanks
that's the other thing about them i like lovely noise i use mine with the sigg fuel bottles the rubber seals ok you just need to be sure and tighten them up properly
Hey, Bruce, Congrats on your new Dragonfly! As I mentioned in our PM, I think it's a wonderful stove, but I did warn you that the pump might fail, very soon. Mine broke the tabs on the very first usage!! I took the pump back to REI, and they exchanged it for a brand new version, which as I've written before, is head and shoulders above the older ones, for strength, anyway. Worth a try. If a local dealer won't help, then give MSR a shout, and explain that you bought this stove brand new, and that the pump arrived broken. They very well might send you a replacement pump for free. Again, worth a shot. I like the Dragonfly, but still love my MSR X-GK stoves the best, as they have proven reliable for many, many, many years, and the Dragonfly is still a "newbie", as far as I'm concerned. Thanks Doc Have to make a trip to Cairns Saturday but doubt if anyone will exchange it there. Sill have a go any way. Her virginity lasted4 hrs. Bugga Bit crappy and the jet leaked. Fixed that I hope . Iit don't seem to leak no more. Was some red sealant on the base of the jet seat?? Any hoo it burns blue flat out now after 1/2 hr or so. Crappy and yellowy down low still. Think its 10 years of dry grease and oil and muck to come out of it. Stinks funny so I hope when the new burns out and off it . It'll go better. Found that the connection wire to the pump assembly pivots around with light but positive friction and you can flippy stop it. Either that or I take out the cleaning needle in the DK jet.Maybe it'll burn better. Or the plate needs lifting a bit. Not going to try anything until I'm sure there is no foreign oils etc to come out of it still Initial burn. Impressed. Think I'll be cooking over there somewhere at the next outing all on me own thou. Away so folks can hear each other!!! Least I'll be able to hear if its going or not!!! Whhoo have noise and flame. use a big fuel bottle and don't overfill and the" flippy stop" is the way to go if you get the timing right you can empty the fuel line as part of the burn time and not waste fuel also no fuel in the pipe to stink up your kit,and they say the nova is the only one with "flippy stop" if you use a 250ml sigg fuel bottle stand it upright on the pump knob as then fuel line pick-up is in the airspace
The Seller contacted me and asked if I wanted to return it. And get me money back. Think I'll keep it instead. Fixed the pump up and I think it will be right for a good while yet unless they have a habit of failing elsewhere. Played with the burner plate height and thou it still a bit crappy on simmer it doesn't foul the bottom of the pot. Could be the kero. Just stripped and cleaned it.Clen after hrs of burning still. See what happens. Got a deeper roar to it now and maybe lost a little speed in boiling but flame spreads out more. Maybe more testing needs to be done, but I think the plate had been pushed well down it the burner and not enough air in the fuel mix to get the kero to burn fully. (was streaky and sooty bits coming out of it about half throttle).Made the bell glow but now tamer. Just have to find the right combo of heat to air mix. White gas you wouldn't even know. Post a pic of it working when I sort it out if I can. Happy deaf as a post Barra
I think you have a great stove, far better than Whisperlite. The price difference is about 2:1, when purchased new. Plus Dragonfly has the eminently adjustable in falme department, and you have no problem simmering. I am debating, if I should add to my collection--for I really do not need it, for I have three XGKs and one Whisperlike Internationale. I sort of wish the pot support on Dragonfly is tad lower--like a half inch above the burner, instead of one inch. For XGK, I can understand the height necessitated by the vapor loop, but why so high on Dragonfly?
Thinking the same b2m Time of the monoxide revelation maybe. Simmer be too hot close down. bit better heat disperson.trying to get the small roarer burner to spread is heat a bit more. Don't know got me beat.
truth be told? You got the bette rof the 2. That, The Dragon Fly is the only one I wld go for. And if you got it for less than $130? You are lucky indeed. It's the only model that hjas a realistic temp control, but, is white gas only.
And you didn't even have to ask for an upgrade Sweet! I am seriously considering buying a dragonfly but also have my eye on a Primus Multifuel too. Both cost around the same and come with service kits and windscreen. I am leaning towards the MSR only because I am familar with them.Any feeling on which is a better stove.
hi Qburt i don't know about the primus stoves though i have looked at the omnifuel seems like a good bit of kit i really like the ti version,i wish msr had fitted the dragonfly in the same body as the xgk ex as the dragonfly is quite a bit bulkier to pack but it has got a large pan support platform so if you use big pots its a good option, ive not had any trouble with my DF so no complaints but it did come with the new type pump,the old one didn't have many fans
