I have had one of these Swedish army trangia stoves for about a week. It came from a surplus store. Only the wind guard was painted, the rest was plain alloy. Every time I used it there were mild but annoying paint fumes coming from the wind guard. The solution, I lit a small fire inside the wind guard and the paint just disappeared. Now the wind guard looks great, matching the pot and no fumes. An added bonus was it was fun having the little fire. Maybe I am the only one who had this problem, if not I hope this tip is helpful. Yes. I would have expected it to be high heat paint but it wasn't. My next plan is to get a second burner into it. Here in Marlborough, NZ. The local Outward Bound School (I guess most of you have heard of them, they are all over the world, even in Central park, or so I was told) were having problems with their standard trangia stoves being too slow on cold days so someone clever designed a way to put two burners in, apparently they really get going. This trangia should take two burners easily with no modification. Hopefully it will be a lot faster!
If you havent already, ditch the burner and worthless simmer ring for Trangia items! You have to change both it seems, at least that was the conclusion I came to in testing. I just scrubbed off the paint from the bottom of the lid so it didnt drip paint flavored condensated steam back into my food. Looks a tad tatty but I could give a rats about that. Hot water, detergent and a pot scourer seemed to work ok. Interesting bits of kit, largely moron proof (as much as anything ever is, at least) and work good.
Hi NZMIKE I guess my burner is a little different to yours, It has no simmer ring and is stamped as a trangia burner. My main concern with it is that is hard to light! I don't know much about trangia stoves but I would guess this burner is larger that most. I tested this stove today, boiling a litre of water, in the wind first with the burner it came with 14min and then with two of my homemade burners 11 mins. Pretty slow both ways. Mind you they reached that state that MSR calls boiling (little bubbles) much sooner. I do really like this stove but its probably best to use the pots on a fire and have the burner as a back up.
If you aren't already doing so, try this. Pour some meths in the groove around the outside of the burner holes and light that. Within about 30 seconds flames should pop from the burner holes and you're good to go. I've found this a much better & easier way to light the Trangia burner than trying to light the fuel in the 'inner well'. Hope this helps.
Few extra drops running down the sides around the base of the burner will get it fired up hot and quick!! in the right place too.
