Hmmmmmm, Just bought a Camping Gaz Lotus cooker which takes the larger size 13.5 oz canisters. Alas, upon asking at various shops, they no longer sell or seem to sell these canisters in NZ, only the smaller ones. Does anyone know if they still sell these elsewhere in the world? I thought, if they don't, I could make a wood block to fit behind the smaller canister thus making it the same size as the larger canister which would then fit in the cooker. I guess, ya have to buy the odd lemon. I should know better, and stick with spirits-based stoves.
The trouble with older gassies and IMHO especially with Camping Gaz is the fact that the canisters often become obsolete. Rando 360, Globetrotter, et al. it's not just Camping Gaz also some of the early Primus gas stuff is also impossible to get cartriges for. Then there is the Hank Roberts / Gerry / Optimus rubber ball canister which is practically impossible to find also. I must get 1 call/email a week on this subject here at work.... OK, here are the photos. They are a bit blurry but so am I this early Saturday morning. At least, today will arrive an Optimus 8 or variant in the mail with what I've been wanting for ages - a mini pump which will hopefully fit on my SVEA 123R. Impatience mixed with happiness and a wee hangover. Heavenly. 8-[
Wow, never saw that size before, at least in the USA. I have been buying CampingGaz pierceables since at least the mid '70s. All I ever saw were the 190 or 200 gram cartridges and the Globetrotter sizes. So I am pretty sure you won't find any of the big ones in the USA. I still see an occasional 190 gram cartridge. Haven't seen a Globetrotter in several years. Seems Gaz has gone to the resealable cartridges at least in the USA. BTW, you can buy an old Camping Gaz stove and reuse the bails or even the whole cartridge holder section with the other size stoves. You can even buy a resealable cartridge base and use them with the pierceable cartridge type burners. Might be an alterative but the resealables are wider so not sure if they would fit your stove. Hi ! Surely you use the smaller size canister doubled up. When top one runs out, take one from bottom and put dead one at bottom. Hope you get the idea. I was going to buy one of these Lotus gas stoves myself on eBay last week. Up for grabs in USA, possibly Colorado area but the postage was too much and me and UPS don't get on too well since they threw my parcel from USA over the back fence and it was only by chance I found it !! That's a good idea. I was wondering about whether they would be the right size. I'll take my old canister in and measure it. Otherwise, I thought about making a base to fit a smaller one which would work but your idea is far better. Cheers
Hi ! Me again. I know that the two medium size gas canisters will replace the larger size gas container. If you bash this eBay number in you will see the Lotus stove I thought about buying when my Bleuet single cylinder gas stove toppled over yet again as the blue plastic base has got so brittle it won't clip on any more and the hot water for my evening grub went everywhere. Particularly as I was trying to cook in the trailer away from the wind. I am really a lamp collector so tend to use my stove for simplicity. I still think the blue Gaz cylinder for camping, picnics and beyond is one of those all-time great inventions like the mini car, red telephone boxes or cat's eyes in the middle of road ! Meanwhile here's the No. 230288405580 I guess Ross is away camping for the weekend as I have scanned and sent him a 1968 Camping Gaz International catalogue to hopefully list for all to see. Say, I have this exact stove. Purchased some time ago. I stack two cartridges and it seems to work fine. Developed a problem though. It now leaks at the swiveling valve, just below where the cartridges screw into. Any idea? Thinking about just taking the thing apart and seeing what's up. Any one know of availability of GAZ parts or diagrams of Lotus stove?? Thanks
Me too. Mine exploded in gas as it was/is blocked or something. Luckily I wss not near the open flame. It's now sitting as a pull to bits and reassemble project for a boring TV night.
I have an old Camping Gaz lamp that uses the same frame as this stove, I've always used two cartridges one on top of t’other and never had any problems. Incidentally We (In the scout movement) have been advised to move away from this type of stove and lantern due to issues with leaky canisters. Si
i thought i might resurrect this old thread to show you should never give up on obsolete canisters. I bought 3 (yes three) boxes of those cartridges Wednesday at a boot fair. I have a growing collection of the GT 106 as well. You can double up the mid-sized cans to make a large one but you can't cut one in half to make a small one I use the 106 in my ACE stove if space is tight on the bike when I use it for fishing. The big beasties fit in my Camping Gaz standard lamp. If you're stockpiling cans, I find it best to spray the seams with a lacquer. I use a car chrome lacquer spray from the days of chrome bumpers, otherwise they rust quite easily. If my shed catches fire ...run along with the hard-to-find are 50 odd 206 versions
